One of the better ones

There are probably a dozen or so books on this subject that are equally good, and I'm not sure that any book is significantly better than the others in that grouping.
I happen to like this book, and use it in my HR work and in my company. Its length and to-the-point style make it ideal for busy managers, and it is indeed about as practical as it can get.
Its strength though, is that it breaks out of some of the conventional thinking about performance management and appraisal. For example, it points out that performance problems can indeed be attributed to weakness in an employee, but may also be caused by problems in the actual system of work. In this respect it draws from systems thinking and takes into account some of the criticisms of Deming, Scholtes and others.
My favorite part has to be the idea of "no blame", and that the purpose of performance management and appraisal is not to punish or even to reward, but to identify barriers to performance, and work together with the employee to remove them, no matter where they come from. Since the goal is better individual performance which contributes to organizational performance, I think this is practical indeed.
There's a positiveness to this book. If you think performance management and appraisal are excuses to kick [behind] and blame people for failure, then don't get this book, get a whip and chair.

A sustainable approach

When searching for a fair and sustainable performance management system this book brings all about the need mindset behind that system. As for my experience this is what many companies are waiting for. And also employees! They are key to make it happen and this book shows what parts of behavioural science can be applied. A good read for the coming 10 years!

A waste of money and time.

Barring better judgement, I purchased this book. Most of the titles in this series are god and informative, but this one is so far off center, I cannot recommend it.
His solutions are absurd and have no practical application in the "real world" and are educational theory at best.
Don't purchase this book, don't recommend it - I want my money back!

Emerging - A step step beyond...

This book has changed the face of our early childhood program.It has become our journal and map to providing a more appropriate child directed program. I have found that it released our teachers from the bounderies that surrounded them by guiding them to a classroom that is focused on the children's interest and yet provided an approach that was within reach. Emergent was always a frightening concept - but this book brought it down to earth for the staff by walking them through a year long journey of group of teachers - many of them with personalities that are similar to ourselves - breaking down each step and showing the simplicity of the concept. I recommend that this be a guide to all early childhood programs that step forward in their quest to providing a developmentally appropriate enviroment for their children

An absolute MUST HAVE for those working with young children!

Emergent curriculum is the idea that the themes and activities which happen in a preschool program should center on the interests of the children. FOr teachers who already have this child-centered philosophy, this book is an enjoyable read and an important step in moving towards the Project Approach. For those who are used to teaching with a theme-a-week, pre-written lesson plans (or something similar), this book takes you on a journey of transformation in a very relaxed way. As an early childhood teacher for over 15 years, this is the book that is first on my recommendations for teachers or programs wishing to provide high quality education. It is an easily readable book, mixing good practice with real characters for a book which at times reads like a good novel.

Part of my collection on emergent curricula

This is an update by one of the early formulators of and long-term proponents for emergent curriculum. This book illustrates how emergent curricula might work and how it might be developed in a small early childhood center. Jones uses a narrative style, compositing her many years of experiences working with early childhood programs into a believable story of the ins, outs, ups, and downs, of the fuzzy process of seeing children as the correct place to look for curricular ideas.

Jones first introduced the term "emergent curriculum" in 1970 in the introduction to "Curriculum is what happens." She has published articles for teachers and directors over the years to encourage them to work in this way with children. To my mind, she has been the strongest proponent and clearest voice for what in essence is the American parallel to the methods developed in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

This book is a quick read, a good story, and displays the wisdom needed to pull together a group around a strange and invigorating way to work with young children.

Just wanted to say that I think this book is great, a pretty in depth look into the genre, specifically when you consider it's only 130 pages. I like that the author address the socio-political influences of the genre, in particular bring up comparisons to Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto and Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. What I didn't care for is the author's verbose use of language. It reads very slowly, as one practically needs a dictionary to decipher what the author is saying. Just be warned that this is far from light reading on the horror genre.

About the Author

GABE T. WANG is Professor of Sociology at William Paterson University. He has published four books including China’s Population Problems, Thoughts and Policies (1999), China and the Taiwan Issue (2006) and American Sociology and the Socioeconomic Development of China (2013). His research focuses on population, socioeconomic development, and adolescent deviant behaviours. Professor Wang has given lectures in many universities and research institutes in China. He has over 20 years of experience in teaching research methods and student research.

KEUMJAE PARK is Associate Professor of Sociology at William Paterson University. Her research focuses on immigrant women, migration in comparative perspectives, identities, and social inequality. She is the author of Korean Immigrant Women and the Renegotiation of Identity: Class, Gender, and Politics of Identity (2009). She enjoys teaching and mentoring student research and postgraduate theses. She teaches research methods and data analysis courses on a regular basis.

This book is plagiarized

The guy who is here claiming to be the author has taken the text mostly word for word. He made a few changes to try to be tricky but was evidently too lazy to even do much of a job of para-phrasing! LOL

Do not under any circumstances buy this. This sort of disgusting intellectual dishonesty cannot be tolerated.

After a little more investigation, I found that this guy has "published" at least several books on Amazon that were actually written a LONG time ago. On some the real author is credited under the title on the Amazon product page, but Patrick seems unable to resist the temptation to put his name solely on the cover in every case.
