Some good ideas, but lacking information

I own a juice and smoothie bar and have a lot of customers who look for new and delicious juice and smoothie specials. I bought this book hoping to get some fresh ideas and combinations. While the author does offer some nice combos, ALL of them are complicated, requiring one to make a tea of some obscure sort, then blend in something else. All of this is total pain. It makes all these offerings seem more like medicine than food.
Another thing-there are NO YIELDS ANYWHERE! So one juice will make 4 ounces, another will make 8-10. I'd expect some variation based on the age of the fruits and veggies but these recipes are all over the place.
It would be useful to have a note attached to each juice recipe with whatever nutritional benefits can be had by drinking it. Such as-cleansing, good for UTIs, full of vitamin C, hearty and filling, packed with anti-oxidants, etc. As published, you have to look up all the different ingredients in the previous chapters to find the nutritional benefits-confusing and a hassle.

"The Juicing Bible" seems to have been written for a very specific audience. If you have a well stocked cupboard filled with spices and a garden filled with herbs then this book might be what you are looking for. After looking through the entire book I found one recipe I could actually make without searching in a health store for uncommon ingredients. The recipe I tried was the "Apple Spice Cocktail." This used ingredients I had in my refrigerator and instead of the spices recommended I just used cinnamon. So in a way I created my own recipe based on a good idea.

Some of the ingredients in this book include: lavender, powdered licorice, dandelions, powdered linden flower, borage leaves, acai berries, red raspberry leaves, stinging nettle, kelp, astragalus root, meadowsweet and apricot milk. While I've heard of these ingredients before I have no idea where to get them. The small sources section at the back of the book doesn't really give me any clues as to who carries which herbs. Most of the spices used in this book can however be found at your local grocery store.

This book is divided into 8 main sections which include:

Healthy Body Systems - A brief discussion of the endocrine system, immune system, musculoskeletal system, nervous system and respiratory system. There is a short discussion of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle spasms, anxiety, depression, memory loss, asthma and allergies.

Health Conditions - This is a comprehensive section organized alphabetically. It discusses things like cancer prevention, headaches, indigestion and water retention.
Each illness is discussed and remedies are given. The remedies include healing foods and herbs. Healing drinks are listed at the end of each section.

Healthy Foods - This section lists fruits and vegetables in alphabetical order. Each vegetable and fruit has a section with a description, use and buying and storing information. At the end of each section there is a list of juices you can make using the specific fruit or vegetable. For instance under cucumbers it is listed as a diuretic and is a good source of vitamin A.

Fruit and Vegetable Juices - This is the section that includes the basic fruit and vegetable juice recipes. Here you will find simple fruit and vegetable combinations. Some include:

Orange Star - Star fruits, oranges, cantaloupe and lemon
Pear Fennel - Pears, fennel, apples and powdered licorice
Summer Nectar - Nectarines, apricots, blueberries, peaches and plums
Green Magic - celery, cabbages, spinach, pumpkin and powdered ginkgo

Juices for Healthy Bodies - This section is divided up into:

Heart-Healthy Tonics
Aperitifs and Digestives
Bitters
Endocrine Elixirs
Immunity Boosters
Muscle Powers
Nerve Nourishers
Stress Busters
Tonics

Roughies and Smoothies - Here you will find recipes for applesauce, Papaya Marinade, Berry Smoothies and Tropical Cocktails.

Frozen Treats - If you have an ice cream machine then you will love this section. Some of the interesting combinations include Strawberry-Beet Ice, Lemon Ice, Basil-Pear Sherbet, Fruit Pulp Frozen yogurt (a good way to use up fruit pulp after juicing) and Berry Pops.

To complete the book there is a glossary and a helpful index. While this book is interesting it will take a greater deal of effort to find some of the ingredients. You can of course substitute many ingredients and still have good success with the recipes. I'd recommend this to the very adventurous juicer who loves herbs and spices and is willing to plant unique plants in his/her garden. I've been to many health food stores but I've never found some of the ingredients listed in this book. So many of the recipes require advanced planning. If you want a creative book on juicing that has ingredients that are easy to find I can recommend: Ultimate Juicing: Delicious Recipes for Over 125 of the Best Fruit & Vegetable Juice Combinations and The Juice Lady's Juicing for High Level Wellness and Vibrant Good Looks.

I looked through the book prior to purchasing it so I knew what to expect, but if you've never seen the book, I'll provide a brief review. the book is divided into sections. there is one section which speaks to several ailments (in Alpha order) and tells you what to get more of, what to avoid and has page numbers to recipes good for those ailments. It also goes through fruits, veggies and herbs and how to juice them, pulp them and use them for teas, what to look for when picking your fruits and how to clean them. Then the book goes into recipes, first fruit juices, then veggie juices, smoothies, teas and cocktails. It is a great resource that I use often.

About the Author

Teresa Budworth is a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner, Chartered Fellow of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and a Chartered Director. During a 35 year career in health and safety, she has specialised in safety consultancy. Her work on competence, education and training culminated in her appointment as Chief Executive of NEBOSH; the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health, in 2006.

Eng. Waddah Shihab Ghanem Al Hashemi is the Chief EHSQ Compliance Officer and Director, EHSQ Compliance for the ENOC Group in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He is the Chairman of various Committees within the Organization, including the Wellness and Social Activities Program which serves over 6000 employees. This series is still very plot-heavy, but still very enjoyable.

The problem with Rulca is dealt with in this volume, and the group moves on to entering a new town to move along the main plot. Limris is still up to something, and I don’t think I like him. I’m honestly not hugely invested in the larger plot, even if I do find some of it exciting.

Meanwhile, Vald is having a hard time accepting his other self, even if he has started using it when he needs to. Then he and Halvir have a fight, and make up with some sex. It’s a little adorable, and then very hot, and then sweet again. I just like them, unabashedly. I am reading this solely for them, and I am not ashamed.

Which is to say that I will be getting the next volume, hopefully soon, just for them, and I am excited for it.

Best series of all time, both the art, the romance, and the fantastical, mysterious plot. You cannot love yaoi, and not read this one. Oh, Wow, I loved how this one ended. Yamane has done an outstanding job in writing this yaoi manga - in my opinion. Just can't say enough good stuff about the series, only that the couples relationship is intriguing and you want more. Now I have to wait for the next Vol. and I know it has to be as great as the previous volumes.

I learned things!

I very much enjoyed this. It's readable on one plane flight, and you'll learn a little about game theory (I mean, I'm very non-confident with math/theory, but he really dumbs it down to make it understandable) and a little about dating, maybe, too. and a little about gift-giving... which you probably need. and it made for a few good conversations in the days after i read it!

He's done it again!

Anyone who has read Uri's first book 'Thinking Statistically' will know how he has the capacity to bring humour and insight to bear on the seemingly mundane. Well, he has done it again! This is a short book but I read it at one sitting (and was nearly late for a meeting!)- I was so absorbed. Who would have thought that leggings played such a large role in life? Where else would you get a deep understanding of Games Theory based on the films of Hugh Grant (and Colin Firth)? At several points I laughed out loud - but, here's the thing: I now understand much more about Games Theory than I did when I sat down to read the book (and possibly also quite a lot more about the dating habits of young men) - and it did not hurt one bit. Buy this book now - and buy the first book too. You will not be disappointed.

I find this book very useful and well conceived to deal with Game Theory from an unscientific approach. The author chose very funny examples and situations -as dating- to do it, so they can stick on us from now on. As I see it, the most remarkable utility of the book is that the reader will immediately link daily life situations with the theory and, therefore, think more strategically.
All those who are intrigued by Game Theory and want to get a good sense of it in a friendly -but also deep- way, will find an very useful source of ideas in this nice book.

The latest identification guide to commercial aircraft

Many identification guides have been written concerning commercial aircraft, but this field guide is the latest in my memory that features the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the new Bombardier CSeries regional jet. I like how the writer provided concise specifications and 3-view illustrations of each aircraft.

Where is the Convair?

This book is nicely laid out with photos and drawings, but as an historic review of the world's major commercial airliners, it neglects to include the Consolidated Convair series of airliners (240/340/440). This significant airliner basically replaced the DC-3 for short haul work and was purchased and used extensively by virtually every major US airline and most of the major European carriers. A book of this type cannot fail to include this important airliner in the history of commercial aviation. In addition, the authors include the Russian supersonic airliner, which hardly flew and never made a mark on civil aviation history.

As computer-based modelling takes over this function, the fundamentals are in danger of being forgotten. This is a classic and remarkably thorough text on the subject. As someone who reads graphics as part of construction and prototype projects, I've found the book essential to understanding not only the views of parts, but how to see them in their three-dimensional functional aspect. If you ever have to make parts from scratch -- know what they do and how they fit -- this is the book to have on your reference shelf. It is also the basic source for design and even sketching techniques essential to making yourself understood in quick studies and discussions with others. Note, earlier editions are equally relevant.

For all her offended sniffs and humphs, Mary Poppins is likely the most exciting nanny England--and the world--has ever seen. Young Jane and Michael Banks have no idea what's in store for them when Mary Poppins blows in on the east wind one autumn evening. Soon, though, the children are having tea on the ceiling, flying around the world in a minute (visiting polar bears and hyacinth macaws on the way), and secretly watching as their unusual nanny pastes gold paper stars to the sky. Mary's stern and haughty exterior belies the delightful nonsense she harbors; her charges, as well as her literary fans, respect and adore her.

Grownups who have forgotten Mary Poppins's true charms will be tickled pink to rediscover this uniquely unsentimental fantasy. Younger readers will walk into Mary's world without batting an eye--of course the animals in the zoo exchange places with people on the night of the full moon. From a tea party on the ceiling to riding on peppermint horses, rather unusual and surprising adventures await Jane and Michael whenever Mary Poppins pops in. This 80th anniversary edition includes the four original books, Mary Poppins (originally published 1934), Mary Poppins Comes Back (originally published 1935), Mary Poppins Opens the Door (original published 1943), and Mary Poppins in the Park (originally published 1952) grouped into one convenient volume. Beyond the handsome package—a rich brick red cover accented with black and gold spot-gloss decoration—the deeper gems of this edition are the extras. There's a foreword by Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked (HarperCollins, 1995) and Egg & Spoon (Candlewick, 2014), that relates the story of his nerve-wracking, but ultimately illuminating, meeting with the great P.L. Travers when she was in her nineties. Maguire accurately captures the difference between the silver screen versions and the original tales: "The books…show glimmers of a far more mysterious and even dangerous world. For thirty years before the nanny began to sing on the screen, she stalked the pages of these books with ferocity, vanity, and power." At the end there's a brief excerpt from a talk Travers gave at the Unversity of Connecticut in 1974 entitled "On Not Writing for Children." Librarians and students of children's literature would do well to think on Traver's reluctance to call herself a "children's book author," for, as she states, "every book is a message, and if children happen to receive and like it, they will appropriate it to themselves no matter what the author may say nor what label he gives himself." A must-have for diehard fans and, though a tad bulky for little hands, nevertheless an excellent addition to home, library, and school collections.

a classic - almost

Reading the books that I loved as a child was wonderful - until I realized that it had been edited to make it more socially acceptable. The chapter called "Bad Tuesday" involves a magical compass that transports the characters all over the world. The original work used the author's vision of what the people would be like, and had used some pretty offensive stereotypes of the time. But the altered version completely changed the story, not only using animals instead of people, but changing even the storyline. Would have liked to be able to see the original work also, or at least been warned that the newer version was altered to that extent.

Mary Poppins Pops In For Parties in the Park

When adults forget their childhood pals, daydreamers make foolish wishes and the wind blows unusually strong, it always leads to something quite out of the ordinary -- that is, whenever Mary Poppins is around.
In this, the final Mary Poppins book that P.L. Travers gave us before her death at age 90, we share the five Banks' childrens' adventures. Besides Jane and Michael, who were in the classic Disney movie, there are also toddler twins John and Barbara and infant Annabel.
A big departure from the Disney flick is Mary Poppins herself. Here, she is not the smiling, syrupy sweet nanny that young Julie Andrews portrayed; rather, the book's title character is strict, stern, often sarcastic and very taken with herself. Her strong personality makes her a unique storybook character and readers will find this Mary Poppins more of an enigma. Which, frankly, makes for better stories.
Everything in this book is G-rated but not preachy. Travers gives her young readers many fascinating, but never frightening, fantasy situations. Or are they real? Jane and Michael can never quite tell. The lines between what's real and what's not always blur around Mary Poppins.
This book is a series of unrelated chapters, self-contained stories, all dealing with the same main characters. Nothing is ever as it seems in the nursery of No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane -- or in the nearby park.
On a hot summer's day, Mary Poppins tells the children a tale of a hobo who was an angel in disguise, shedding his rags and growing wings as he flies away.
In another chapter, Michael, upset that he's caught a cold, finds that some days when everything seems to be going all right, it's actually going all wrong. He's taught a valuable lesson on a planet full of cats.
Later in the book, the children find messages on falling leaves. And witness a delightful, but not frightening, Halloween shadow dance in the park.
The nanny's magical cousin, Mr. Mo, is introduced. Jane finds the little toy figures she's created and destroyed do have lives of their own.
Around Mary Poppins, adults -- including favorites such as Admiral Boom, Miss Lark and her two dogs Andrew and Willoughby, the Bird Woman and Bert -- are caught off balance. Zookeepers, policemen and taxi drivers react to a flurry of frenzied events. Characters pop out of storybooks, out of Jane's mind, and off ceramic bookends. Lions and unicorns and even Indian chiefs prance through the park.
We are taken to worlds that exist between the blades of grass in the lawn, and up in the sky, to where felines and children disappear. There are traffic snarls, wedding breakfasts and birthday parties. And through it all, stalks Mary Poppins, with not a hair out of place. In very short order, characters get what they deserve, if not what they expect, and things are set right.
How does she do it? No one knows. Mary Poppins, you see, never, ever explains. But, she always entertains. Have some fun in the park with this magical nanny.

The entire Mary Poppins book series by the wonderful P.L. Travers is fantastic. I'm so glad to see they have finally arrived in hardcover with the original covers. No, this is not the sugary Disney movie--but this, the original story, will take your breath away with its magic and wonder. Give it a try. I think if you take these stories for what they are you will appreciate the wit and the adventure.
