Not for beginners

Logic has an elegant simplicity to it that this author tries valiantly to capture, but fails. If one is already acquainted with propositional and predicate calculus, this is a joy to read for its elegance (something often attributed to Mates, but I think erroneously). This is a second-course, not a first encounter, text. But once the foundations of logical theory are laid, this is worthy of beholding the same concepts from a purely mathematical perspective.

A Solid and Well-Written Introduction to Propositional and Predicate Logic

D. S. Heersink comments in his review that this book is not for beginners; I think he very much mistaken. I was lucky to encounter this book early. It quite carefully develops the concepts involved (in particular it carefully explains what is expected of the operation of implication -- this point can confuse some students and Stolyar goes out of his way to explain the special truth-functional notion of implication and its relation to the more general concept of "conditionals," the idea of entailment and meaningful content, &c.).

After carefully developing the concepts in an informal way, the book delves into formal systems. I think that too many books spend too much time on the informal aspects and only negatively impact comprehension by waiting (and waiting...and waiting...) to introduce more formal matters. Stolyar always indicates alternative notational conventions, so that readers are not confused on encountering different textbooks.

The book covers briefly the use of logic for designing logic circuits, and in both its bibliography and footnotes provides further references on the subjects it discusses (including sources on the history of logic, notably Kneale and Kneale's "The Development of Logic"). The book was written quite a while ago, so the sources and some of the content are dated (next to no model theory, though by page 48 at least the general idea of metalogical features is introduced...probably the most sophisticated text it refers to is Kleene's "Introduction to Metamathematics," which is once again in print thanks to Isha Press International, though Kleene too suffers from a lack of model theory).

Different people do learn in different ways. I would categorize this book for "the serious student" -- not that it is particularly difficult to dive into, but for the purposes of (for instance) the most elementary of philosophy-logic-or philosophical logic classes, yes, yes, the formal development may not be necessary. And since it only touches on the aspect of circuit design, if this happens to be the reason you are interested in logic, you may wan to look elsewhere (though I would urge gaining a general comprehension before pursuing circuit-design or computer science applications).

But judge for yourself: there is a "Look Inside" preview available, and plenty of information on the Dover Publications website. The book is cheap: even if you don't like it (and don't return it) you will only lose a few bucks. But don't fret. I think it will be worth your investment.

A lovely story

A wonderful story on how people should be in life - thinking of others. Cecil came to the aid of a wounded stranger and Kelly came to the aid of the homeless person. Both were blessed as a consequence of their actions.

Rainy afternoon read.

This is an entertaining story about Cecil who is down on his luck. It opens with him sleeping in the doorway of a storefront of Kelly’s Antiques. Sick and weak he summons the energy to assist a woman who was robbed and beaten. This act of kindness is the beginning of his fortunes changing.

I enjoyed this story of Cecil’s adventures as he reverses his fortunes and makes new friends. He eventually is able to use his skill as a former CEO to help his friends with their businesses. It is a fable about how you can’t judge someone by their appearance. The characters are well developed. The dialogue is realistic. The descriptions can place you at the scene of the action. It has all the best story elements.

It is light reading for a rainy afternoon. I give it a four out of possible five.

A heart warming story about Cecil who suddenly finds himself penniless and homeless after being a very successful man in corporate America. Because he acted as a Good Samaritan one particular day he was given the opportunity for a new life by helping Kelly with her struggling antique business. In turn they helped each other, and then others.
A beautifully written story.

Ulrich Weisstein is Professor Emeritus of Indiana University, USA, where he taught German, English and Comparative Literature. This first book by the author of Solitude has been long out of print. Examining the basic assumptions of his profession, psychotherapist Storr argues that the essential goal of man is self-realization, the drive toward maturity that is inextricably linked with "the development of his relationship with others," and that the purpose of psychotherapy is to further that development in collaboration with the therapist. Although his own training is Jungian, Storr is remarkably candid in conceding that Freudian and Kleinian analysts achieve roughly the same degree of success. But too much of the book is given over to unstartling pronouncements, such as his proclamation that immature parents generally raise immature children, or to dry reiteration of post-Freudian commonplaces. Moreover, Storr's analysis of homosexuality as "a failure of maturation" has long since been superseded by other views. The same might be said of some of his observations about the etiology of schizophrenia. Finally, although the introductory chapters are lucid and crisp, the bulk of the book is written in an academic style that wears out its welcome in a few pages.

Another excellent title from Dr Anthony Storr, deep insights into the origins of personality disorders & the impact these personalities have on significant relationships. Recommended reading for all who are seeking a greater level of understanding into people who compulsively inflict pain & suffering on those who are significant to them. All Anthony Storr's books offer great depth & increased awareness for those of us who seek self knowledge & clarity in human relationships.

This is a very clearly written book. Its also one of the most coherent integrations of Jungian and psychoanalytic ideas ever written. I recently ordered another copy of this book as my copy is becoming a bit worn. Worn it may be but the content is far from being worn. Anthony Storr was a brilliant writer and makes the deepest insights about the workings of unconscious processes readily available to anyone who can read English. A brilliant synthesis of Jungian and psychoanalytic object relations theory.

Like a detailed game of Battleship with characters from Star Trek

This game system comes with a large hex sheet and hex chips for travel. Also has Starship Combat Book, Cadet's Orientation Book, Star Fleet Operations Manual and Game Operations Manual. There are sheets to track your on-board control panels for engineering, helm, tacticle for large small and Romulan vessels, etc. as well as chips to show damage.

Sigh. So I was working in my basement and found my box of games, which included my ST:RPG materials. This was something we played before the ST:TNG series was out, and actually before the third ST movie hit the theaters. In short, it was about the only way we nerdy teens could have any stories in the ST universe short of reading the novels.

The game itself is kind of in two big broad sections. The first is the easiest - the starship combat simulator system. Up until that point the only real Star Trek-themed starship combat thing was the Starfleet Battles game. The downside is that the system tended to be a bit complicated. The FASA system is much more simplified, even if you're playing the advanced rules, and easier to play.

But this is more than starship combat - the combat only comes into play when it's part of the broader role playing game. In this, the rules are a little more intricate and involved. It's more involved than, say, AD&D. Further, though this is a weakness of the genre in general, if you have a bad gamerunner then the overall game is just going to be not much fun. I'll say that given the vast source material, it's often easier for players to lose their way than it is in a comparable D&D campaign. It's almost TOO open world in that respect.

I was fortunate when this came out to be friends with a rabid ST fan and he did a great job with this game. I did find it extremely enjoyable, especially branching out and playing characters who weren't actually in Starfleet (the Trader Captains and Merchant Princes expansion is invaluable for this...), or in my case playing a Starfleet officer who was drummed out of the service following a misunderstanding and frame-up. As I said, the source material is so rich that you can really go nuts.

I have a lot of fond memories of this game. As movies (and television shows) came out, the game definitely shows its age and is downright contradictory to canon in parts...but I think it's good where it counts. It's a fun game for the engaged/involved player.

Great book. If you liked the HBR article, you'll love this!

Frequently organizations face the challange of what not to do. They tend to believe in the person presenting the idea, rather then creating a rigorous process for evaluating the options before them. Companies adopting best practices in managing their investment options realize substantial gains in their long term bottem line. This book quantifies this performance difference, and what the best practices are across a range of industries.
Why aren't organizations more rigorous in selecting projects? The book outlines several barriers which are extremely relevent:
� It will make a popular champion look bad,
� Organizational resistance to change, or cannibalization of an existing business for a new opportunity,
� We confuse the urgent with the important,
� Its hard to agree on measures and success criteria
� People are afraid of making the wrong prediction, so they don't make any,
� Its hard to normalize results from different contributors,
� Business plans are not integrated with new project activity,
� Power and politics, a methodical evaluation leaves no room for interpretation and "behind the scenes" trade offs between groups and individuals,
� Lack of strategy.
The best practices outlined in this book are backed by substantial research. I would have like to have seen a few additional chapters on application of best practices in real companies ... a case study of a turn around.

One of the best organising frameworks I've met

The Strategic Decisions Group framework for smart organisation is informative. One reason for this is that the authors are reporting a practical benchmark study of R&D which appears to include every American corporate I've ever heard of. They do readers the great favour of synthesising this into a 9 principle framework for Smart Organisation. 3 principles for achieving purpose: -continual learning -value creation culture -creating alternatives 3 principles for mobilizing resources: -open inforamtion flow -disciplined decision making -alignment and empowerment 3 principles for understaning environment: -systems thinking -embracing uncertainty -outside-in strategic perspective What I especially like is that for each principle 5 How do you knows? are given scaling the difference between an organisation which hasn't got a clue about the principle (not smart) to one that lives it (smart org) For example these are the 5 how-you-knows of alignment & empowerment: 1 Examine the strategies at different levels (eg technology strategy to portfolio strategy to project startegy). In smart org: there are clear strategies at all levels taht provide useful guidance for decision making. Strategies at one level are clearly linked to the next. Lower level strategies interpret and carry out the implementation of higher-level strategies. In not-smart: few strategies or they provide little guidance for decision-making. They are viewed cynically as corporate PR. Links among strategies are absent, unclear or ambiguous 2 Examine the value measures used to evaluate decisions at different levels. In smart org: there are clear measures of value at all levels. Value measures at one strategic level are clearly linked through the strategy to measures at the next level. In non-smart: There may be no value measures. If there are, each level sets its own values or decision criteria, with no special requirement that they be related to values and strategies at other levels. 3 Examine the approvals required to make or carry out important decisions. In smart org: Decisions require few approvals because people understand the strategy and are trusted to carry it out. Meetings with upper management are viewed as adding value. In not-smart: Decisions require many levels of approval. Review meetings are perceived as wasting time. Often meetings with upper management are feared because it may redirect efforts and change priorities without clear reason. Upper management often feels overloaded with the need to check on subordinates. 4 Examine the roles of people involved in an important recent decision. In smart orgs: Many people participated in the decision process,at multiple levels in the organisation. A dialogue was carried out in the process that continually aligned and refined the vertical links. Management at different levels collaborated to build a high quality decision and achieved aligned commitment to action. In non-smart: Either few people participated in the decision or so many did that the process got bogged down. Typically, lower level employees make proposals to upper levels for approval or rejection 5 Examine a recent decision that was controversial. In smart org: People unified around the decisions aand carried it out with little intervention. They understood the reasons for the decision and believe the organisation is carrying out a sensible strategy for creating value. Great insights for all concerned with strategy and renewal.

Focusing on large R&D intensive organizations, this book explores nine key principles that make these enterprises effective, such as: open information flow, systems thinking, and continual learning. The author's emphasize the decision making process as a means of changing and improving overall organizational performance. If you are seeking new insights into how strategy is developed, excellence can be achieved in decision making, and organization renewal can be realized, you will find this book enlightening and fascinating reading. The insights offered here are by no means limited to high-technology firms; they apply to any organization seeking to be successful in today's fast-paced markets. This work includes an organizational IQ test (a diagnostic tool) for identifying root causes of the barriers to improving decision processes. There is an impressive amount of knowledge about organization to be gleaned in The Smart Company. Whether you are a technology -based bus! iness or not, you will find many nuggets in this work. Captivating Original and Entertaining Historical/Fantasy

From the very first pages the reader will be able to lose themselves in MY DEVILISH SCOTSMAN, the second book in author Jen Holling's Medieval Scottish trilogy featuring the three MacDonell sisters. The plot of three sisters, all witches, being married off by their ailing father who wants to see them protected before he dies is one that is original and totally captivating as each is given depth, drama and passion by this clever wordsmith.

Gillian MacDonell has always felt incomplete because she felt she did not inherit any mystical gifts or powers as did her other two sisters. When her father arranged a match with the notorious Earl of Kincreag, rumored to have murdered his wife and child, excruciating headaches and strong premonitions began to plague her. Believing as her father did that the rumors were untrue, she went about doing all in her power to bring the reluctant earl, who had a terribly cynical view of not trusting woman, into going thru with the wedding. [This particular part of the story concerning a love potion and its after-effects was truly amusing - but you'll have to read the book to find out more!]

From the moment Gillian arrived at Kincreag Castle several attempts would be made on her life, yet truly eerie incidences would save her time and again. As she began to fall more in love with Nicholas, her new husband, she also discovered that she did indeed inherit a mystical power -- one that would prove that the rumors about him might not be true and the danger facing them stemmed from the mortal world and not the immortal.

*** Along with a dynamic plot, the action in this story plays non-stop making this a hard book to put aside and I find myself reaching for the computer keyboard in search of the other two books making up this trilogy. This is most definitely a book that will engage the reader both with the original story, the edge of the seat drama, and the passionate love story it tells. Highly enjoyable, the reader should be captivated by this latest trilogy offering. [...]

Couldn't put it down! (not a spoiler)

After reading the first book (My Wicked Highlander) in this series, I was 'straining at the bit' to read this one. It was every bit as good as I'd hoped: Nicholas Lyon has all the intrigue one could hope for in a dark, romantic hero. His meek new bride finds herself dwarfed by dark secrets he won't speak of, and must try to uncover them while keeping secrets of her own. I was so captivated by this book, I wasted no time buying the third, which is proving to be just as good! The suspense, the mystery, the romance, the paranormal twists will keep you riveted, I promise!

Darker than the first book, and much better - 3.5 stars

For so many years, Gillian felt that she was some kind of mistake, the odd one in the family with no magical powers. After years of hoping, she has given up in despair and resigned herself to the fact that she's not a real MacDonell like her sisters are. So she thought she could finally be of some importance if only she could be a countess. Thus, when the opportunity presented itself in the form of the Earl of Kincreag, Gillian is more than ready to take the role that her sister, Isobel, has turned her back on. So who cares if she is marrying the "Devil Earl?" Deep in her heart, she knows that he is innocent. But what happens when her true powers start to manifest just when she is slowly starting to break down her husband's defences?

After being cuckolded by his first wife, whose suicide was blamed on him, Nicholas Lyon is suspicious of all women. But in need of an heir, he has no choice but to remarry. Owing his life to Alan MacDonell, he will do anything to repay him, even if it means marrying another of his daughter especially after her older sister practically left him at the altar and ran off with a knight. But as long as he gets his heir, he will put up with the marriage... but then Gillian starts breaking down his defences.

MY DEVILISH SCOTSMAN is the second instalment in Jen Holling's MacDonell Brides trilogy. Featuring a more serious plotline than the first book, this deals with more magic and paranormal. I liked Gillian's character, meek at first, yet we are given the reason for this, as she was the only one who saw her mother burnt for witchcraft. I enjoyed seeing her discover her real powers and it was good to see her effect on Nicholas. As for our hero, I wasn't sure about him when I first read of him in the first book. But it was so good seeing him change and laugh again. My favorite part is when he discovers Gillian's attempt in giving him a love philter. It sure provided much entertainment.

The other two books in the trilogy are MY WICKED HIGHLANDER (book 1) and MY SHADOW WARRIOR (book 3). I recommend reading them in order as the mystery regarding the sisters' father's illness continues on from the first book.
