There's more to English football than Premier League

As an American who follows one of the Big (Money) Four clubs in the Premier League, this was an enlightening read that helped open my eyes to what else the English game has to offer. In reading of the history of Liverpool FC, it's hard not to come across names of clubs that have fallen to the periphery of Football--Preston North End where the great Bill Shankly and Tom Finney played, historic rivals Leeds United, and the old powerhouse Leicester fill stories of what once was, but where are they now? I was partly resigned to write these teams off as just existing in the lower tiers of the English Football Association with a small chance of being relevant if they happened to gain promotion into the Premiership. Price helps show that clubs playing in League 2 should not be written off, but instead embraced and supported with just as much, of not more, passion than their big brothers in the Premier League.

This book is more than just a personal journey of dropping Manchester United fandom for a local League 2 side; Price digs in brings out the financial inequities in modern Football and hammers home that it's all about the money. As a fan, of course I'm aware that the rich are very very rich and the poor just can't compete. The simple fact that I can run down the street to a store fully stocked with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man U kits absolutely plays into that. Even in the states, it's easier to purchase a Wayne Rooney Man U shirt than it is to purchase a Jermaine Jones or Clint Dempsey MLS shirt. Later today, Shrewsbury Town will take on Chelsea in the League Cup (whatever it's called now), and I look forward to cheering on the League 2 underdogs against the Premier League leaders.

Overall, this is a fantastic journey that chronicles the massive choice to stop following the most successful Premier League club in favor of a local club that only survived relegation out of the League 2 by goal differential. Price investigates life after football, struggles during a League 2 playing career, and the personal connection that a tiny club has to it's small band of ever loyal supporters. Great read! I would recommend this to those who know no other life than Premier League...which is on every Saturday and Sunday morning s and is more accessible in the US than it is in the UK...target audience of millions of untapped consumers maybe?

Not enough detail

The book ambitiously tries to summarize the main points of many business best-sellers, but I find the summaries too brief to get a real understanding of the material (the summaries are only 3-5 pages each). Some of the summaries try to cram so much information in a small space that the writing is choppy and unreadable. I would not recommend this book.

I purchased this book for a Readings in Management class. The chapters in the book are a series of writings from many authors and other respected business people. Each chapter gives a different viewpoint on business practice and bahavior. It is a great book to have on hand for those times when you are looking for ideas to solve problems in business.

Absolutely fabulous resource!!!

I only wish this book had been available when I was still living in Japan.

Areas of coins that can be intimidating to the Western coin collector are the 'cash' type coins as well the other (gasp, not even round!) non-western style type coinages. I happen to have a fondness for things Japanese (including coins), but even so I did avoid the pre-Meiji era coins as the only reading resources I knew of were scarce, limited, difficult to understand, pricey or some combination of all these issues. The 'gold standard' resource would definitely be Munro, but as it was written in 1904 the writing style is not as accessible to the modern reader, not to mention it was hard to find (in nice copy that is--the OCR and xerox copies floating around often left a lot to be desired, though there is a 2010 printing that is quite serviceable now).

Enter this book--it gives an excellent introduction to the numbers, locations, era/Emperor names etc so when trying to look up specific coins they make sense. The illustrations and kanji depictions are clear and the layout of the information is very understandable. There is plenty of historical reference relating to the changes in the coinage as well which makes for interesting reading as well.

Basically the coinage is covered starting from the 'twelve antique coins' dating back to the Nara period following through periods of Chinese coin usage, imitations of the Chinese designs etc. The changes are well described and depicted. There are also excellent descriptions and black and white illustrations showing the old and new Kanei Tsuho type coinage including mintmarks and a well done 'finding guide' in order to identify different styles. If I could have only one book referring to the pre-Meiji coinage this would be the one I would choose. The information is clear and well laid out, and has excellent descriptions, historical notes and illustrations, with research notes and citations provided. (Okay, if someone were to give me a well kept 1904 copy of Munro I'd take that too, but for readability, clarity and value I like this one!).

Highly recommended for novice and serious collector alike

I must commend Mr. Hartill on a very organized, concise, very informative volume that seems to meet the collector between The Standard Catalog of World Coins and Ogawa/Munro/JNDA. The illustrations are plentiful and clear and, given time put into this volume, will aid the collector in cataloging and dating his coins. I was put off at first by the similarities of the various Kanei Tsuho, but Hartill guides you in differentiating these often difficult coins. Excellent layout /proportions of pages and images. Too, users will not have to identify items by correlating text and images back and forth from one page to another as in a number of other sources since they are conveniently located on the same page. I have used this volume ever since I purchased it and it has proven invaluable. Highly recommended for novice and serious collector alike.

One of the only English language surveys of Japanese coinage up to the Meiji era...

The 1868 Meiji Restoration changed Japan forever. To this day, it still marks an indelible dividing line between the modern and the pre-modern. Not only did the Emperor's role and power change significantly, but the once isolated country openly appropriated and embraced western ideals and lifestyles. Politics changed. Economics changed. Food changed. Clothing changed. All lives changed. Shifts of such magnitude have seismic impact and typically reverberate throughout all aspects of a culture. Not surprisingly, Japan's coinage also clearly reflected these explosive events. The stark differences between pre-Meiji and Meiji coins provides a luminous metallic equivalent of just how much the Restoration uprooted traditional Japanese ways. Comparing a Meiji-era 1 Yen silver coin, with its beautifully ornate obverse dragon coiling and writhing like wind blown tinsel, to a Kanei Tsuho copper coin, or even to a small rectangular silver Issu-Gin coin, of the same era says it all. Drastic change had occurred. This may qualify as one of modern coinage's most momentous transformations, mirroring Japan's overall unprecedented modernization through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But what came before that leap still has a fascinating story to tell. Once again, coins can provide a window to history, assuming that sufficient information exists.

Given the upheavals of World War II and the often overwhelming language and cultural barriers, Japanese coinage in general remains a niche field in English-language numismatics. Within this niche, the blazing aesthetic appeal and precious metal content of Meiji coins may distract collectors away from the generally cruder pre-Meiji coins. Information on these earlier coins in English had remained irritatingly sparse until very recently. A few books existed, including Munro's classic "Coins of Japan" from 1904 and "Japanese Coinage" from 1972, but they begged and pleaded for updates and revisions. A new work finally arrived in 2011, called "Early Japanese Coins," that greatly illuminates the often mysterious and ineffable field of pre-Meiji Japanese coinage. It provides a solid survey from Japan's first known coins to the final gold, silver and copper releases until the 1871 New Currency Act changed everything. "Pre-Meiji" is a slight misnomer here, since Japan did produce some traditional coinage during the Meiji era. Nonetheless, it provides a convenient historical demarcation despite the brief overlap.

The book begins with a smattering of general information: a rarity and (very general) price guide, calligraphic conventions, symbolism, introductory information on Japanese pronunciation and writing, a chart of numbers and common words, units of measurement, era names, a fascinating description of the manufacture of traditional poured and cast coins, maps of provinces and a bibliography. The book does of course include plenty of Japanese characters, but it transliterates everything. No Japanese language knowledge is required. Concerning rarity and pricing, the book uses a simple scale ranging from "VC" or "Very Common" to "ER" or "Extremely Rare." Given this ranking, an accompanying chart gives an extremely general price range. For example, a "Scarce" coin can price anywhere from 10,000 to 14,999 Yen. As such, this is not really a price guide and prices don't appear next to individual coins. Regardless, it does provide a bridge to the annually published JNDA price guide, which does include more recent pricing information in Yen (but this guide does require considerably more Japanese language knowledge).

Next, things unfold mostly chronologically, starting with "early coinage" such as the Fuhon coins excavated in 1999 and the enigmatic non-inscribed silver coins or "Mu Mon Gin Sen." These date to the 7th century. Historical information accompanies each section. The famous, and immensely rare, "Twelve Antique Coins" from the Nara and Heian periods follow. From roughly 710 to 1185 Japan made its own coins in 12 varieties that evolved through time. The first of these, the "Wado Kaichin" has become a ubiquitous symbol in Japan. It even appears on biscuits. Then a shock: a 600 year gap exists between the "Twelve Antique Coins" and the next officially made Japanese coins. Nothing. Barter prevailed, but Chinese and other unofficial coins, known as "Bita-Sen," did circulate. This lasted until the time of the "great unifiers" during the Momoyama period in the late 16th century, the time of such famous Japanese names as Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Not only did they unify Japan, they largely unified the coinage and re-introduced it as a medium of exchange. Coins returned for good. Various varieties exist, each differentiated by thier cast Kanji characters. Apart from these characters, most of these coins look nearly identical. Some have writing on the reverse, some don't. The Edo Period didn't introduce many changes either apart from the Kanji. The book lists and pictures, in ink rubbings similar to Munro, seemingly endless varieties. The book's longest section deals with the widely circulated, and still quite easy to find, Kanei Tsuho coins. Many have interesting wave patterns on the reverse. So many varietes exist that the book limits itself to only the major ones. Even this limited scope provides for pages of information and coin rubbings. Other coins also appear, such as the common oval-shaped Tempo Tsuho coins, less common large square coins and various provincial issues. E-sen often feature interesting depictions of animals such as phoenix, horses, roosters, foxes, Gods such as Daikoku or Ebisu, volcanoes or Samurai helmets. The book categorizes these as "decorative coins" or amulets. Plenty of fascinating rubbings of these coins are included. The final sections discuss gold and silver coins and their context. Most gold coinage initially served ceremonial or political purposes and didn't circulate. This includes the famous hand-inked and gorgeous Oban, which evolved into the Koban and gradually saw significant debasement. Small rectangular electrum coins did circulate in numerous varieties. The Chogin and Mameita-gin stand out among silver issues. Chogin were elongated oval stamped slugs. Round Mameta-gin made up the value difference in Chogin and usually accompanied them. Small rectangular silver coins also circulated up and into the Meiji era. These remain generally affordable today. The book includes a chart that helps determine the era of one of these small coins. The location of an inverted sakura on the obverse indicates its approximate age. Additional charts show Kanji varieties. Short discussions of the rare "Ansei Ni Shu Gin," and its fascinating back story, counterstamped foreign coins and local silver coins close this chapter. The book ends with "Coin Packages" or "Tsutsumi kin-ga." These beyond rare pieces feature multiple gold or silver coins wrapped in paper and certified. Apparently people trusted the certifiers so much they rarely opened the packages. The wealthy typically used these for large purchases or transfers of wealth. This section also includes four photos of these rare specimens.

Anyone desiring knowledge of pre-modern Japanese coins will find a slew of helpful and easy to comprehend information in "Early Japanese Coins." Roughly the size of a sheet of paper, it contains only black and white coin rubbings and pictures, but the lack of color doesn't detract from the content. It's fair to say that another book, especially a recent one, with this much information doesn't even exist at this time. As such, if Japanese coins ever become more than a niche field in the English-speaking world, this book will have likely played a major role in that transformation.

It's deja vu all over again in this predictable entry. Star Trek fans will delight in identifying "obscure" references to episodes and characters from the TV series: they will cheer not only the rapacious Q from The Next Generation but also Trelane (the eponymous "Squire of Gothos" from The Original Series). The story involves the Enterprise crew through three alternative timelines with, of course, The Fate of the Universe hanging in the balance. David ( Imzadi ) limns a Trek-enamored multiverse in which Tasha Yar's "bad haircut" is as important as the massacre of Klingons at Narendra Three. The novel is fast-paced and the prose sloppy. Characters from the first two TV series appear exactly as they were: David scrupulously adds nothing to extant characterizations as he juggles several subplots and intrigues. Certain to delight the converted are appearances by Jack Crusher and all the myriad Wesleys, among others, as well as relationships between Beverly and Picard, Troi and Riker. While the pulpy action makes this is a Trek-lovers paradise, anyone else will wonder what all the fuss is about.

A complicated Star Trek: The Next Generation novel that springs from a TV episode of the old series, in which Captain Kirk is held captive to the whims of a little boy named Trelane, the son of gods from the Q Continuum. The character Q from The Next Generation series is his guardian. Trelane gets out of hand in his adolescence, scattering pieces of Q throughout time and inventing a machine in which all the dimensions of the universe chaotically intersect. He continues the campaign begun in his childhood, to play with human beings as toys, by collapsing three parallel Enterprises into one. A madhouse ensues, with such quick cuts between scenes that overlapping, slightly different Worfs and Tasha Yars and Will Rikers, all bent on killing or rescuing one another, bring to mind a Marx brothers movie. The most intriguing of these alternative plot lines involves Beverly Crusher's long-dead husband, Jack, who is captain of the Enterprise; Picard is his disgraced second-in-command. In this "reality," Jack, and Beverly's son, Wesley, is dead, and Picard and Beverly are having an affair, until Trelane informs Jack, and he explodes in rage, murdering Beverly and killing himself. Purists may not enjoy the fact that every crew member on every "track" is helpless before Trelane, although the correct Picard, with the aid of a restored Q, eventually saves the universe by turning on Trelane as if he were a spoiled child. It Was Just "Okay"

As far as a science fiction tale goes, this one was just okay – this one had way too much dialogue, and the Trelane character, combined with Captain Kirk, Picard, Q, etc. seemed as if the author was really trying too hard to bring in not only TNG characters but rope in the fans of the original series. Without having a spoiler, the Trelane character was more obnoxious than he was menacing. Star Trek fans should really like this one as it revisits a lot of their favorite characters but science fiction fans will feel a little bit of a letdown: I did.

I originally picked this up for $1.99 during a Kindle Daily Deal vs. its normal price of $7.99: at $7.99 it would have been a disaster. If you’re more into science fiction vs. TNG, I would give this one a pass at that price.

This is a doubly abridged audiobook

Eleven bucks for an abridged version of an abridged version ( barely 2 hours). The web page that I have on my phone did not show how short this thing is. Further it appears that Amazon/Audible combined the reviews for all formats of this story, which is misleading.
When I got the download on my Kindle and saw what this thing actually is, perhaps better ... Isn't,I immediately removed it and asked for a refund.

Arguably the Greatest Star Trek Tie in Novel Ever

This is arguably the great Star Trek Novel ever written. It takes place on a grand scale, covering several interesting timelines, then smashing them together.

The real test for novels like these are if the characters sounds like they should...quite often tie in novels will have characters saying things that they never would on the show, which can really pull me out of the book. Thankfully that isn't a problem here. Peter David has an excellent grasp of what makes each of these characters tick. The many references to past Star Trek adventures just serve to sweeten the deal for Star Trek fans.

The Kindle edition is pretty good. I only noticed about a dozen typos, but none were so bad that I couldn't figure out what the actual intended word was. I don't have the paper version to compare it to, so this issue might just be the way the book is written, but within chapters, it can be difficult to spot the perspective changes. Rather than leaving an extra space between paragraphs to denote a chance in perspective/location, the next section just starts immediately after the previous sentence. Sometimes that seems intentional (a joke carries over between sections, characters seem to react to something someone else in another area said, etc.), but other times it just makes it confusing.

Overall I love this book. It was one of the first books I picked up for my kindle, because I wanted to re-read it (I had originally read it many years ago). The only real problem is that this is as good as it gets. It piques the appetite for more books like this, but no other Star Trek novel matches it. Peter David's other Star Trek novels are great (Vendetta, Imzadi, etc.), but this is his best.

Excellent, but.........

This book has some excellent resources and can be an excellent tool for the classroom. However, the initial print of the book answer key was full of errors. If these have been sorted out then it is a worthwhile purchase for a class. The level of difficulty is rather high and is most certainly geared towards the HL level rather than the SL level, and even saying this, the lower ability HL students will find it tough. The test examples are an excellent resource and it gives guidance on Written Assignments and Extended Essays in English B. There are lots of good examples of Individual Oral practice photos and good ideas for Interactive Orals. I would like to have seen more advice on how to handle paper one questions in the way of building skills to appraoch paper one.

A clear and useful book to get things done...

Strategy Execution Heroes is so refreshingly different in many ways. I've read a fair few books on strategy in my time and was curious to see if this recent release by Jeroen De Flander had approached the subject any differently. I would say with a resounding `yes' that he has.

It is never easy to demystify a subject such as Strategy Execution since, by its nature, it is wrapped up in jargon and complexity. But somehow he has succeeded; the clear structure, the straightforward tone written from the manager's point of view and a practical step-by-step approach backed up with tried and tested theory. He obviously knows the subject back-to-front and inside-out... but, while writing, he hasn't either assumed any prior knowledge on the part of the reader or simplified it too much. It really strikes the bulls-eye for readers with all different levels of knowledge... never an easy task! I think that those readers with greater strategy implementation experience will benefit as much as the next person partly thanks also to the valuable input from the very impressive list of contributors.

I have already read this book from start to finish and have now started to re-read those chapters than I found most relevant to me and my colleagues. This book is like a great film - the more you times you look at it, the more you get out of it.

I thoroughly recommend it to anyone - those with a mere curiosity in strategy implementation or those that think they have already read it all. Either way you will finish it with a whole lot more knowledge and understanding than you had before... and all the tools you need to turn strategy into performance!

A great practical resource for leaders

Strategy Execution Heroes is the best book on strategy implementation I've ever read, and it may even be the best book ever written on the subject.

Here's why:

1. It's practical. Most books on strategy spend the first 50 pages repeating what's already been written while adding more theory to the theory! If you're lucky you might glean a few tips that apply to your job. This book is the exact opposite. It has more useful tips in one chapter than you would find in the whole of most management books.

2. Contributions by experts. It's rare to be able to get so up close and personal and read about top strategists' views on implementing strategy as you can in this book.

3. If you're new to books of this ilk, you'll really appreciate a lot of the how-to material offered here. If you're a pro, you'll appreciate the more advanced material that explains how to go that one step further.

4. The downloads are very useful. Some (such as the training module on strategy communication (download 5) and the workshop format to define the future capabilities for your team, department or organisation (download 25) are more content driven than others offering structure and measurement. I've already used several from the two categories and, for me, those alone are worth the investment.

One thing missing in the book is practical advice on the Balanced Scorecard. For me, that should be the centrepiece of any book about execution. De Flander does indicate that he and the team had to make choices about what to put in and what not. And I understand that. But leaving it out is a great pity - I would have really loved to read his take on it, especially as I see that he was the business line manager for Arthur D. Little. Maybe in his next book!

Apart from this, the book as it stands is an outright success and one I'll be recommending to colleagues, clients, and anyone else who will listen.

Impressive collection of practical tips gathered in a single book on Strategy Execution

I think Strategy Execution Heroes is an excellent resource for anyone with an interest in strategy and its implementation. If you are looking for practical, tried and tested tips but don't want to wade through 10 other books to find them, this book is the answer.

Author Jeroen De Flander obviously gained a wealth of experience at Arthur D. Little which he has managed to package up and deliver in an incredibly clear and succinct way in his book. He has also surrounded himself with an impressive team of experts and executives who provide insights from their own experience that I haven't found in any other book I have read on the subject.

I must admit to having had a couple of small reservations when I started reading it. I thought it might lack detail and repeat content from Execution (also a great book by the way) by Charan and Bossidy. But these fears were completely unfounded. The detail is undoubtedly there and is even expanded upon with the use of practical examples - and this is what makes it so refreshingly different from other books I have read on the subject. In fact, it is so comprehensive, that someone completely new to the subject could finish the book having gained an excellent overall understanding and appreciation.
I'm convinced that this book will help everyone from students to experienced leaders. And if I've not convinced you yet, check out the Strategy Execution Heroes' website with a wealth of free content. If you like what you read there, you'll love the book. Invest a few pounds and a few hours reading it and I firmly believe it will boost your execution skills.
