Lots of details, but not difinitive.

If you want lots of background information on the lightsabers seen in the Star Wars movies you will find it here. If you want technical details on how a lightsaber works you can find it here. If you want the most comprehensive guide to the weapon ever written... well that book hasn't been made yet. This particular book gives you a broad spectrum of information on all things related to the lightsaber, but it is in no way the greatest resources.
While Star Wars Lightsabers does offer a single reference it leaves out details that have been given in other books. Also this isn't the only place where you can get good and detailed information on the Jedi's trusted weapon. Much of the information can also be found in the Star Wars Visual Dictionaries, and a little more. Does that make this book worthless? No, not at all. But information in the book is duplicated in other resources.
The book is broken down into different sections. The first section deals with a very short history of the lightsaber and how it's made. You see the anatomy of the lightsaber in good detail in this book, and describes the process the lightsaber goes through inside pretty well. However you can get the same, if not slightly more detailed in some areas, information from the Original Star Wars Visual Dictionary as well as the Complete Visual Dictionary (which is essentially all of the visual dictionaries rolled into one with some bonus content). They do talk about some of the different focusing crystals used, and even though it's sparse information it's more than other resources.
Then you have an extensive profile on all the prominent Jedi and their lightsaber. This is the real meat of the book and it gives you a full view of the lightsaber and a little bit of technical data on it as well as some background info of the Jedi. Again, although it's not a lot, I see that details weren't included that can be found in the visual dictionaries (mostly for the Episode II guide and of the complete edition). It would have been nice to add those little tidbits as it would go a long way to make this the top book on the subject.
The next section is one lightsaber techniques and summarizes the various fighting forms as well as target zones. Again this information can be found in the visual dictionaries, and again that source gives just a little more information on what it does give. It also showcases a Jedi that uses the form. But like the previous section this book gives more volume of content with more fighting forms being detailed, if not the most details.
Finally the last section talks about notable lightsaber battles. This is just a play by play of all the lightsaber battles you saw in the movies. No historic duels from the past or anything else to flesh out new details. Just a narrative on what you already saw.
The book about the size of the Essential Guides, but cut in half along the width. It's a relatively thin book holding and it makes wonder why they didn't make a full size book. My theory is they didn't have enough to publish so they size the book accordingly. The information per page, when you look at it, is pretty sparse with photos taking up most the space. It's a pity as just a little more research and creativity would make it really stand out.
I recommend this book to the Star Wars fans who really love all things about the lightsaber as it does flesh out more information than in previous books. Just keep in mind a lot of information is duplicated from the previous definitive resource (the visual dictionaries) and you are not getting ALL of the information published on the subject. It's a great primer for young readers too. However if you really have to choose between this book and the Complete Visual Dictionary I would have to say go with the latter. It gives a lot of the concise info on lightsabers, and although this book technically has more entries it feels more like fluff for the more seriously minded reader of these kinds of books.

A Must Have For Star Wars Fans

This is a fantastic must have for Star Wars fans of all ages. As my son says, "This is the coolest book!" This Star Wars collectible gives a detailed history of light sabers, telling how they are made, which characters use which weapons and shows the difference between the various light sabers. The pictures are great, the explanations intriguing and the details are awesome. Honestly I had no idea there were different designs. I knew about the different colors, but that was it. It's a book I enjoyed reading with my son who's a young, Stars Wars fan. I recommend this book for Star Wars fans of all ages.

Good for beginers

I found this book helpful but only in a rough visual way. the pictures are fairly crisp but lack "all around" detail. I found the instructions for building your lightsaber lacking in clarity or any kind of measurement. I would recommend this for a visual reference only. Also not all lightsabers are represented in this book.
