This is one of the most exciting new reads of the year! A deft, masterly portrayal of a greeting card writer at the epicenter of the swirling, chaotic absurdity that is modern American life, Abandon Every Hope is a pirandellian filibuster of a novel. During the first few chapters, I was a bit skeptical about the use of iambic pentameter---a stylistic tribute to its literary antecedent, Dante's Inferno---but once I got used to the rhythmic pull of the prose, I was laughing out loud at the depiction of the self-important, jejune cast of characters caught in a downward spiral of a comic-hellish New Orleans. I recommend this book if you have ever shook your head and wondered what happens to boorish, narcissistic people who go about their lives oblivious to their effect on others, but beware, in this novel's highly polished prose you may find yourself staring back.

Genius!! Dante's ryhthmic style, lighter theme!

Having visited New Orleans, I was able to visualize the scenes depicted in this book, but I'm sure they could be applied to other cities as well. Anyone with a sense of humor will enjoy the read. I was awed that the author was able to punish today's vexations with such humor while still mimicking Dante's writing style in dealing with transgressions in The Inferno. Dante would get a good laugh and would definitely approve!

Missing answer key kills the usefulness

The lab exercises provided are excellent. The problem is, the lab is full of questions, and there is no answer key provided. So there's no way to validate if you have the correct answer to the questions. This makes it very hard to know if you've actually learned what they are supposed to be teaching you. As such, this is of questionable value.

For fast-paced excitement, you cannot beat The Day the World Ended, which is a day-by-day account of the 1902 volcano, starting on the 2nd of May 1902 and ending on the 8th, that weaves into this time several strong human interest stories. It was written in 1969, 67 years after the eruption, when the authors could still find a few people close to those times to interview. I get the feeling it was based very much on interviews, which gives it an immediacy not as apparent in the other two books: The Last Days of St. Pierre by Ernest Zebrowski and La Catastrophe by Alwyn Scarth. If you can only read one book, make it this one. it reads like a novel.
The cost of this approach is that we cannot be sure all the stories the authors heard were accurate, so we will never know if some of the stories told here, like the placing of troops to stop people leaving the town are true. But for a feeling of impending doom, this book creates the atmosphere perfectly.

Excellent Disaster Book, Fascinating Story

Thomas and Witts tell the story of a week in May, 1902,when the Carrabean city of St. Pierre was obliterated by a volcanic eruption. When I first saw this book, I wondered how anyone could pen over 150 pages on a volcano that wiped a city out in seconds, leaving only two survivors. I thought there would not be much to write about. Boy was I wrong! It turns out that in the week prior to the eruption, St. Pierre was hit by landslides, a tsunami, and even a deadly snake infestation! Several hundred were killed before the great event itself. The final eruption is simply the climatic horror and can almost be seen as a blessing, putting people out of their misery. This book is probably hard to find now, but it is worth getting, and will interest just about everyone from the scientist to the casual reader.

Story of a Political as Well as Natural Disaster

To me this review does not do justice to the most compelling aspect of the book, which is how political pressure, and assurances of safety in the face of all evidence to the contrary, by governmental officials and other trusted leaders dissuaded the people of St. Pierre from evacuating the city in time to save their lives. I read this book many years ago and have forgotten some of the details, but this theme -- more popularly explored in "Jaws" and recently in "Isaac's Storm" -- has stayed in my mind. Most readers will never be threatened by a volcanic eruption, but this book is a somewhat grim reminder that our own leaders may be lying about impending natural disasters. Remember Pelee!

On Friday, April 17, 1964, Dearborn officials introduced America to an entirely new breed of automobile, a fun machine that brought buyers galloping into their friendly neighborhood Ford dealerships. Demand instantly overwhelmed supply, with the few available showroom teaser cars claimed even before they were unveiled. Of course, the initial hubbub eventually died down, though Mustang sales remained incredibly strong for years to come. The one-millionth Mustang rolled off the line in February 1966, and nearly 300,000 pony cars were still hitting the streets annually in 1968.

A resurgence came in 1979 as the more comfortable Fox-chassis Mustang debuted. Performance and pizzazz quickly rose, evidenced by the return of the GT in 1982 and a convertible rendition in 1983, following hiatuses of 13 and 10 years, respectively. A legacy within a legacy grew as the 5.0-liter HO V-8 gained strength to become one of Detroit’s best performance buys. Two years later, it was replaced by the thoroughly modern 4.6-liter modular V-8 with its overhead-cam layout. An even hotter version of this engine, fitted with dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, was created for the Special Vehicle Team’s (SVT) Cobra Mustang, which debuted in 1993. Thus armed, the SVT Cobra surpassed 300 horsepower in 1996 and was on the verge of topping 400 horses in 2003, when the Special Vehicle Team marked its 10-year anniversary.

That same year was Ford Motor Company’s 100th, and the Mustang’s own 40th birthday followed in 2004. Fortunately, those little 40th-anniversary badges weren’t the only presents unwrapped by Ford party-goers during the celebration. Unveiling the 2005 Mustang that January was the real icing on the cake, and there is no doubt the legacy will continue rolling on toward the next milestone.

Magnificent book for a Mustang enthusiast - great photography, coverage of all models from the 1962 prototype to the 2007 GT500. Full technical specs are provided on all models and subtle differences between years and trim levels are outlined in great detail.

It's always difficult to summarise 50 years of history without getting too wordy or overcomplicate things but this book does 50 years in great style.
Every year is dealt with and the photographs are great, perhaps though the print could be a fraction larger.
However then the book would be bigger and heavier which would detract from it

AMAZING!!!!

This book contains so much information, both factual and pictoral documentation. The images, that are included, contain a lot of rich detail that show how beautiful mustangs really are in there journey through the past 43 years of history. This information in this book is so well layed out! The charts and diagrams that are provided make it easy to get quick information about the car, and these charts and diagrams are provided for almost every year mustang. If you are looking for a book that will dramtically increase your knowledge of mustangs and their history, then this is the book for you!

The best overall source on Red Army motivation

Roger Reese's work is always interesting, accessible, and important. This book contributes a lot to our understanding of the Red Army through the extensive use of recently-published interviews and memoirs, and newly-available archival materials. (The Preface provides an excellent evaluation of sources.) The discussion of primary group theory is particularly valuable, as this subject hasn't received nearly enough attention in Russian military history compared to works on Germany's forces. Reese makes a key contribution in his analysis of the Red Army's catastrophic losses of the first year, which he argues was due to the unique military situation (force ratios, training and doctrine, supply, fatigue) rather than to lack of motivation or will. He also persuasively shows that politics played a minimal role as either as a positive or negative troop motivator. Read firsthand accounts, by all means (as another reviewer has suggested) -- then read this book to place the soldiers' experience of war in a meaningful context.

Well-organized book, with pretty decent analysis on a tough topic to address.

This book provides a serious effort to study why the Soviet Army fought in World War Two, with an obvious focus on why the troops fought so hard for a regime that treated its military personnel so callously. Roger Reese goes a long way toward answering this critical question using solid analytic tools and available sources, and I applaud his effort. However, after reading the book one is still left with questions about how Moscow was able to force so many of its troops to take part in so many futile, even suicidal massed infantry attacks against strong defenses. I think that all of us who have read a lot about the war on the Eastern Front are left wondering about this question and I'm guessing that Reese cannot find more first-hand accounts of particiapnts in such actions to better address the question. Nonetheless, Reese's book is well-organized and he does a great job of reiterating his key judgments. A second, minor criticism is that I would have liked more photographs and other graphics.

Interesting account of the many reasons (some obvious, some more complex) why Soviet soldiers fought more or less willingly in World War II. It's not the frequent simple argument that they fought because the NKVD would execute them if they refused.
