Practical Advice

25 Tips for Productivity is Augusto Pinaud's third book but first nonfiction book. However, it feels like he came home since it deals with productivity. I first became aware of Augusto through a productivity group. It didn't take long to realize that Augusto was not someone who theorizes about productivity; rather he is someone who has been there, done that and has the scars to prove it. I always have some nugget to take away after a visit with Augusto. That's why I was so excited to read his latest book. At last Augusto was putting his years of experience into a book.

The key takeaway of the book is you gain productivity by looking at ways to save minutes, not hours. The minutes add up. Specifically what I liked is that Augusto wrote a book for the 21st century. Even if you use a paper-based system, you likely use a computer at least for emails. Due to that your productivity can be impacted by problems with a computer. Augusto provides several tips on how to automate computer backups. Excellent example of evolution of productivity tips.

My top five favorite tips are:

#22 - Common sense is uncommon
#16 - Don't be afraid of the daily to do list
#14 - Have more than one of the things you constantly use
#9 - Always carry your reading material
#7 - Write down the key information - the key lists

I won't go into them in detail but rather encourage you to buy the book. Its a quick read but more importantly one that you will use as a reference tool. I find myself going back to it already.

I have become friends with Augusto over the last three years and could not be prouder of his accomplishments. He is amazingly generous with his knowledge and with this foray into non-fiction writing, I am looking forward to Augusto's next project.

Think highly of the man behind the book, but needs a good editor

I've been a listener to the GTD Virtual Study Group podcast for a while, and Mr Pinaud has top-notch ideas and insight when it comes to being productive (without getting all productivity-pr0n about it). The book did have some good tricks to try applying -- not as many were new to me as I'd hoped, maybe (probably because I listen to the podcast), but def some creative suggestions.

The main difficulty for me, as a reader, was the lack of editing; I found it interfered seriously with my ability to focus on the content. I do realize this is to be expected from a self-published book to some extent, as a professional editor is unlikely to be involved in the process. Still, I hope Mr Pinaud is able to get some support in editing his next one -- someone to address grammatical issues without killing his "voice" -- because it really does make a big difference to those of us consuming his work.

25 tips, simple, candid, productive with a touch of common sense. Good if you're in productivity because it gets you back to basics and great for a beginner, since it takes you to every day life examples in which we are reflected.

Quite fun, easy to read, understand and apply, productivity written by a productivist.

I have been waiting for this book fot quite a while; and let me tell you, it exceeded my expectations.

Couldn't put the book down!

This is a great book for anyone struggling with being Insync with the paranormal and trying to be a good Christian! Adrian did a great job of breaking down verses that support God's given gifts! I will be keeping this is my ghost investigating arsenal! Totally 100% recommend

we didn't read the bible like the other Christian churches

Growing up Catholic, we didn't read the bible like the other Christian churches. You went to church every Sunday, Father preached. I stared off into space most Sundays or looked at the stained glass windows, considered why I hadn't eaten breakfast and hoped I didn't pass out from hunger pains. And Wednesday afternoons you had religion, which was great in elementary - we got an afternoon snack! As I got older, I was the kid in religion class asking those annoying questions that teachers hate because the don't know the answer either! I figured if I was stuck there for an hour, I wanted some answers and not to read out of a book. Yeah, my classmates really enjoyed having me there. For many years I considered myself a "recovering Catholic" as I didn't agree with the doctrine of the church and frankly, I haven't been going to church for many years. I've always felt much more spiritual than religious. In the last 2 1/2 years I "woke up" as they say and during this time I have spent a lot of time in reflection about what it all means. I pray more, a lot more. I talk to God a lot. I talk to angels. I ask for help (and it's still not easy to do). I have conflicts with my family because I'm the "odd man out" because I don't think like the rest of the family when it comes to religion, church, spirituality, and God.

Last fall I had the opportunity to meet Adrian at a local natural healing and psychic show. I remember him saying that he was writing a book that he felt I would benefit from. My goodness here it is!!!!! If I didn't have to go to work I would have read the entire book in 1 day! Alas, it did take me 3 days to read it. I have learned so much and am not afraid anymore of the changes that I'm going through. I'm one of the folks that Adrian refers to as "just coming into their abilities" and it has been a work in progress. I have taken a Reiki class, but I haven't worked on anyone yet in fear that word would get out and that folks would think I'm nuts. The scripture references are great and really made me realize that I do need to read the bible (side note started about 4 years ago and I'm at the beginning of Leviticus - go figure that's quoted a lot in the book). This book has been so insightful, well written and a book that I will refer to often. My 2nd read through will be with a highlighter. I really enjoyed when he talked about prayer and meditation. Meditation is something I have struggled with for a long time. Now I have a better understanding of it!

I've already referred this book to many friends (and that was after reading just through the introduction and preface) in person and via Facebook. For those that aren't going to rush out to the book store to buy this book, I HIGHLY encourage you to give it a chance. You might learn a thing or two that you didn't know previously. It has answered many questions for me, but it's also created more questions! BUY THIS BOOK!

Would it surprise you to find out the bible not only mentions psychic activities but promotes them? In fact, if you have these gifts, not only can you use them, but you should be using them.

This is the point being made in the book “How the be a Christian Psychic” by Adrian Lee. Lee is an accomplished theologian and also able to communicate with spirits and do energy healings. Despite his deep faith, he is has been called out as doing the work of the devil and that he is evil. This started to bother him, as he knows the bible front to back having read it multiple times. He knows the verses that speak of psychic abilities, taking to the dead and healing with one’s hands. He has prepared this book as a personal defense and a reference for others facing the same criticisms. In his work he has discovered he is not alone in this battle.

He expects to receive criticism from Christians who have not read his book or studied the bible to the extent that he has. He also expects criticism from non-Christians who might object to his further stand that if you have these gifts, you not only should be using them, but using them as a Christian, not a pagan, Wiccan or any other faith.

For the Christian psychic, healer, medium, ghost hunter and more, this book will much needed resource on one’s shelf. It is full of discussions of relevant Bible verses as well as Lee’s extensive personal experiences in these areas. If you are an open-minded Christian, Lee’s witnessing of his faith is moving, and may even rekindle your own.

Pay Attention to the Editions, There are some notable differences

There were two editions of this Robert Graves Classic: "Goodbye to All That" made by the author during his lifetime. The first came out in the 20s and was raw and popular and controversial. The second came out in the 50s and was somewhat bowdlerized by the author, because several of the people involved were still alive. His nephew oversaw an edition in 1995 which explained some of the reasons for the changed second edition and restored some of the original material. If you pay attention to details, find out which edition you are getting. I have downrated this edition because it is the second. I purchased the Richard Perceval Graves version off of Amazon about a year ago.
If this is too nitpicky for you, the second edition is still very good, it is missing some interesting material however, particularly the opening poem by Laura Riding and Graves' interesting dedication to her at the end of the book.

I was hoping for more unhinged bee references

Somehow this book made me want to be a turn of the century British boy who ends up fighting in the first world war. I could write that exact same review about a lot of books, but this one did it more.
Some of my school years were spent tracing this good fellow's bee obsession, which somehow never involved reading this one; I had thus high expectations of for a bee-based theory of the war, or some terrifying bee event in his early youth, but if it was there I missed it.

Very good memoir of World War I

There's not a lot I can add to what other reviewers have already said about Graves's memoir, so I'll dispense with a summary and say briefly what I liked and did not like about it. Take it or leave it.

First of all, Graves knows how to write--this memoir is just as entertaining and fun to read as any of his novels. His literacy and narrative ability immediately set him apart from many of the other World War I memoirists--whose books are often clunky and poorly written--as do his wit and his eye for the significant detail. The book is very funny in many places and deeply moving in others. His descriptions of trench life are suitably depressing, as are his tales of the randomness of World War I violence and even the suicidal tendencies of some of the soldiers.

The only things I disliked about Good-bye to All That were Graves's obvious bitterness and the lackluster final third. Graves, of course, is entitled to be bitter about the war--it was a terrible experience for thousands of people--but his view of the war as expressed here is imbalanced. His narrative is significantly skewed and rather self-pitying in places. Also, the strength of his narrative peters out near the end, when he spends some time teaching in Cairo. The last few chapters read more like notable miscellany than a coherent memoir.

Those two misgivings aside, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Not only was it a good memoir, it was a remarkably good source (I read this for a graduate seminar in World War I) for the attitudes and ideals of the "sensitive artistic types" following World War I. If you're interested in comparing this memoir with a vastly different perspective, I recommend reading it along with Ernst J�nger's Storm of Steel.

Stephan F�ssel is director of the Institute of the History of the Book at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, and holder of the Gutenberg Chair at the same university. He has published prolifically on the early days of printing, the sale and publication of books between the 18th and 20th centuries and the future of communications.

Very Handy

I was elated to own a copy of Taschen's facsimile edition of the 1534 Luther Bible, complete with its colour illustrations. These illustration offer a window into the historical and theological thought of Luther who so stronly influenced their content. Cranach was a master artist and engraver. This book collects all these 117 illustrations together and reproduces most in larger format for greater and more detailed study. This allows Stephen Fussel to comment on each and offer explanatory notes to accompany an extended essay. My only complaint is the binding is a little cheap. However, the print quality is very good and vivid.

I hope Taschen publishes many more in this valuable genre.

Beautiful colors, enlarged pictures, weak binding.

I find myself halfway between the previous two reviewers, hence the four stars. I heartily agree that it is great to have all of the pictures from Lucas Cranach's workshop, for the Luther Bible, all in one place, in a large format. It is important to remember that these works were done largely by Cranach's apprentices, because the artistic quality is more on the level of commercial illustration than of fine art. This fact is obvious due to the very large full page folio or even double page folio, with no margins. Compare the faces in these pictures to those in Cranach's famous portraits of Luther, Elizabeth von Bora, his wife, and especially the portrait of Anna Cuspinian, and you will be impressed by the contrast of fine art versus illustration.

But that does not detract from the historical interest of these illustrations. Cranach shows that like Durer before and Blake afterwards, pictures of the Devil and Hell are some of the artist's most interesting subjects. Cranach's illustrations of Revelation (and there are many) come in just behind Durer's famous woodcuts from Revelation as the best known illustrations of that book in the Bible. And what other New Testament book, aside fromt the Gospels, offer such a rich subject.

The double page illustrations have one virtue and one failing. They are worthwhile because you can see all the details, especially on those very busy illusrations from Revelation. From Revelation 4:8, for example we get " 8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and inside. Day and night without ceasing they sing, "Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God the Almighty, who was and is and is to come." The illustration shows the four creatures, covered with eyes. But in a smaller reproduction, those eyes would probably look like nothing more than leopard's spots. The disadvantage of the double sized illustrations is that they span the crease created by the binding, which is not inclined to lay very flat without some persuasion. This risks breaking the mediocre binding quality. But, these pictures are in landscape aspect, so that was about they only way they could be reproduced without loosing the detail. But, by showing all the crude detail, you realize that it was done crudely.

Definitely in the plus column is the price. To have a source of all these pictures which are big enough to hold in front of a small class and be able to point to things, as when you may be studying Revelation, is a big bonus. The drawback is that in order to scan or photocopy them, you may need a larger than "home office" multi-function printer, and you may have to stress the spine of the book.

An excellent bargain for 16th century illustrations.
