Great book!

I have worked with computers for several years now, with my experience being with Microsoft Windows. I am new to the Linux world and have always been interested in knowing more after hearing such stories as Linux running for years without requiring a reboot as well as having many security systems run on Linux due to its security and wanting to get more into security in my career.
Having not known anything about Linux I can honestly say that Richard Blum did an excellent job in writing this book. The way in which Richard explains things in layman terms makes it easy for just about anyone with some knowledge of computers to understand and feel comfortable learning Linux.
I strayed away from the for Dummies series some years back when I purchased a Network+ for Dummies and it did not meet the usual simple explanations I came to expect from the Dummies series but, Richard Blum and the Linux For Dummies, 9th Edition has restored my faith in the Dummies series books.
For some time now I have not enjoyed reading computer related books and mostly did so because I had to and not because I wanted to but, I have really enjoyed reading this book. I would recommend purchasing this book to anyone new to Linux with a bit of computer knowledge looking to tap into what Linux has to offer.

Great starting point!

I read this book after teaching myself how to use the Linux OS. It is a good book and organized very nicely! It seems like it is a great jumping off point for any new user! It explains a bit but not everything. It tells you about Linux itself as an OS not as one of the distros, it comes with two ISO images of two different distros. It comes with Ubuntu 9.04 and I think Fedora 11. Both great Operating Systems but there are many more distros out there too! This book is great for new users but if youre a seasoned user looking for a reference stay away from this book.

I liked this book because of the way it describes a pencil that belongs to a carpenter but is used by an artist to draw. The many descriptions in the book seem like an artist is painting scenes for us to observe. These are beautiful word pictures. It is a unique approach to writing that merits more attention. I recommend it.

I identify the key themes in urban and regional planning which these case studies illustrate. The themes include: the delivery of building land with site preparation, infrastructure and property rights; the size and amount of plots able to match both demographic projections and wealth distribution; the creation of a property market able to deliver affordable land and buildings to match demand, encourage investment and further the development of the economy; the spatial or geographic adjustment of institutional patterns to reflect the components of identity - making for 'fuzzy' sovereignty; and a form of organisation which leads to effective project management and implementation, and so on. The view is taken that lack of suitable development land supply, a land market unable to deliver affordable property to the people and unable to support economic growth, and a spatial-institutional pattern unable to match key aspects of identity, are all causes of war as well as societal or political decline. The book contains many drawings prepared by the author, including plans of urban projects described in the text. It may be of interest particularly to architects, town planners, municipal engineers and civil engineers, urban administrators, urban economists, politicians, diplomats, soldiers, and staff of NGOs and international agencies.

About the Author
John Yarwood graduated in architecture from the University of Edinburgh and in urban planning from the University of Sheffield. His doctoral thesis concerned the history of Islamic urbanism. After an early career in local government, he was for five years head of the architects' department of Telford New Town Development Corporation. After two years as Head of Urban Renewal in Bahrain, he worked as a consultant in Turkey, the Philippines, Kuwait, Jamaica, Dubai, Germany, Finland, Britain, Russia, Poland, China, Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sudan, Afghanistan and Albania. He worked for the E.U, E.C, World Bank, etc. Subsequently he worked as an academic at University College Dublin. He was awarded an MBE in 1997 after his work in Bosnia. He is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He used to be a Quaker. He is married to an ex- children's psychiatric social worker, who is now a counsellor to refugees and torture victims. They have three grown-up children.

It's very unusual but encouraging to see a board-certified forensic psychiatrist writing a book that addresses the spiritual causes of mental health. Of course, mainstream psychiatry, still seriously afflicted with the disorder of scientific materialism, will likely want to distance itself from Dr. Gibson, if it hasn't already done so.

According to the "bio" page in the book, the author received his medical degree at the University of North Carolina and completed his residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. He received the Albert Einstein Foundation Research Award for his work in sleep disorders. He is a former chief of staff at East Valley Camelback Hospital in Mesa, Arizona and a clinical professor of medicine and psychiatry at the Midwestern College of Medicine.

So why is a psychiatrist with such excellent credentials risking his reputation among his professional peers by writing that he can see auras, leave his physical body, and talk to the "dead"? Why would he possibly go public with stories about negative energies or earthbound spirits attaching themselves to living humans and causing their mental disorders? Isn't this called professional suicide?

Gibson does not really address the risks of going public with his experiences, but one might infer that he has evolved beyond the point of being concerned with his reputation. He appears to be the rare scientifically trained man with a "guts."

Early in the book, Gibson, through meditation, encounters an entity calling himself Djehuti. This spirit guide or component of higher self, whatever classification is given to him or it, provides much wisdom and guidance for Gibson and is often quoted. "It is important for you to relieve yourself of the prison of your limited acceptance of reality," Djehuti tells him. "The real you is alive in dreams and beyond. It is time for you to become more active in these realms."

As Gibson learned from Djehuti, he "felt like a caveman who just stumbled onto a 747 Jumbo Jet parked in the forest." In his out-of-body states, he was able to observe the spirit leaving the body of a deceased patient and to communicate with deceased souls. Gradually, he was able to fit the pieces of the puzzle together and make sense of the whole picture. In the final chapter, he states that while he has attempted to apply his newfound understanding of spiritual matters to his growing psychiatric practice, about 90 percent of his patients have no desire hear about the spiritual causes of their problems. But for the 10 percent who are open to it he has seen miraculous sometimes spontaneous healing take place. He ends by saying that his passion in life is to help as many souls as possible, "wisely employing what I see as the emerging science of the soul in the 21st Century."

This makes for a fascinating read for the open-minded.

***** If You Won't Ever Die, Then Don't Read This Book *****

As a mental health clinician myself, I can state unequivocally that I have never read a book by a board-certified psychiatrist that held more hope for the human race than this one does in fact. Truthfully, where are you going to find a physician that not only speaks candidly about his encounters with deceased patients, but does so in a way that makes you feel fuzzy all over, enough to hunt this medic down and give him a big bear hug for all mankind now?

Gosh, I must be going soft-hearted in my old age but this is the gratitude one feels as you read this non-fiction story that reads better than most medical novels of fiction today. This doctor of souls starts out hitting the medical wards of his hospital -- Albert Einstein College of Medicine -- running at a fast-clipped pace to attend to the needs of disturbed people on the "night shift," then accelerates as more and more of his "deceased" clients make contact with him daily, seeking help from beyond the veil of death. Now if these close encounters don't leave you breathless, as they did me, then, perhaps, you need to check your pulse? For maybe my friend you've passed over to The Other Side as well now but don't even know it either!

In summary, if you have read the genre of near-death and related mystical books, as I have, don't make the mistake of lumping this one with those. This is a story all its own; there ain't another one like it, trust me. In short, it says that we not only DO NOT DIE, but it also prepares us psychologically for what we might come face-to-face with, too: The gods of Egypt! Smile if you want, smirk if you are a skeptic as I once was, but don't fail to buy this book and give Dr. Gibson, MD, a fair reading in the court of public opinion first. More so, let's call our favorite talk show hosts and make this man explain himself to us! Inquiring minds like mine want to know the truth -- do we die or don't we? If not, what's all the fuss in funerals and the grief about, really? Shouldn't we be celebrating every loved ones passing through the "test of time" into eternity like a rite of passage from childhood to immortality?

The nature of the soul

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, my only regret is that I wished it was longer. In reading this book I feel very much connected to the author and his experiences (especially since I am going thru medical training myself). However, what is unique is that the author gives clues to the true nature of the soul. Especially, when he talks about his dreams which is actually worth reading over a few time because there is a great truth hidden in the messages contained in the dream section.

Each recipe starts with the title, prep time, cooking time and servings.
Then the list of ingredients and instructions on how to make the dish.
There are no pictures. There are also no nutritional information.
Table of contents starts with a link to a dish, a link to the ingredients for that dish and link to the directions for that dish.
Halfway through the book the format changes for the recipes: some nutritional information is included: fat content is not broken up into the 4 main ones, no sodium is mentioned but carbs and calories and protein are.

One of the Best

My 2nd grader and I listened to the audio book on a long drive, and then he read the book himself early in third grade. It is a quiet, slowly-unfolding story, with memorable characters, as well as a great tribute to "old" New York City. Characters include a very realistic Italian immigrant family who own a newsstand underground at a subway entrance, an elderly Chinese man, exotic to the young lead boy character, yet approachable and very kind, and a host of helpful and sometimes mischievous animal life that gets particularly busy when no humans are around, including of course, the cricket with a talent for opera singing.

My son and I are voracious readers, and we rate this evocative, tender, and imaginative story in our top 5 of all time, along with classics like Charlotte's Web.

The Cricket In Times Square Is Awesome!

The Cricket in Times Square is the first book in the series. It's about a cat named Harry, a mouse named Tucker, but it's mostly about a cricket named Chester. Chester lives in Connecticut. He was found by a lady who stuffs him in her purse. He gets carried all the way, to New York in a subway station. There's a family who sells newspapers in the subway station. And there's a boy who finds Chester and picks him up and buys a special golden cage with a bell that hangs down. Once Chester hears the bell he is able to sing. Then Chester has his own concert.
My favorite part is when Chester has his own little concert and he makes a lot of money because Chester makes beautiful music.
I would recommend this book and series to grade two to six because they are great fantasy stories about animals, but I would recommend them the most to people who like fantasy and animals.
By the way this book is the first book out of seven books. They're great books to read.

This was a big hit with our three-and-a-half year old. It was the second chapter book I read aloud to him, and perfect for his age. As other reviewers have noted, the tense scenes are minimal, all the characters are appealing (although there is a bit of ethnic stereotyping), and the themes of friendship and loyalty are positive.

This book has 22 step-by-step demonstrations of all the basic-level aurbrush techniques! It says what type of airbrushes are used for what type of airbrushing! Picking an air source, airbrsuh, paint, painting surfaces and things you need to get started in both Illustration and T-shirt airbrushing! This is a book I have read 3 or 4 times and every time I read it I find out something new! This is a must for any airbrush artist or artist to be!

Disappointing

As a beginner I feel I almost wasted my money. It actually doesn't tell tou "HOW" to do things, it tells you "DO" this and "DO" that, "DRAW" a line hear... It doesn't explain why they use light colors first in some projects, darker tones first in others (so how do I procede??). Though half of the book is addressed to T-shirt airbrushing, no instructions are given on how to prepare cotton for your paintjob, how to heat-fix the colors...

No instructions at all are given on the most important aspect of double-action airbrushing: dosing the trigger for air and/or color. You always read "draw", "smooth" here, "shade" this. I will PRACTICE the airbrush and look for another guide.
