A Brilliant Originative Novel

I obtained “ The American Granddaughter ” from Amazon It is the English translation of “ الـحـفـيـدة الأمريكـيـة ”, written by Inaam Kachachi. published in 2008 by Dar al-Jadid. The translation into English was carried by Nariman Yousif and published by Bloomsbury Publishing foundation in 2010

I enjoyed reading the English translation of “The American Granddaughter ”. It seized my interest so much that I could not put it down until the end. Though the translation seems to be good enough, I am sure I would have enjoyed it much more if I had the opportunity of reading it in its original Arabic.

Inaam Kachachi is an Iraqi author, currently living in Paris. Therefore, it is natural, that when writing about her mother country, you feel that words are flowing down from the very depth of her heart, and not from her keyboard

The Arabic version of “ The American Granddaughter ” was submitted for the 2009 International Prize for Arabic fiction. It did not win the prize, but reached the six-short-list of among more than 250 works. Since I had not read the other woks, I cannot make a comparative objective judgement, but the mere fact that Kachachi`s novel ascended to that prestigious position, I can confidently assert that it must be a valuable piece of literature

The plot of the novel runs like this :.
Zeina, is the protagonist of “ The American Granddaughter ”. Her father, when she was about twelve years old, was arrested and tortured by Saddam`s police. After his release he fled to Jordan. Then he immigrated with his family to America
In 2003, when George W. Bush invaded Iraq, Zeina is a young woman. The invading army needs to recruit Arabic speaking American citizens as interpreters who would be paid with lucrative salaries. Zeina happens to be in bad need of money mainly, to treat her mother and her drug addicted brother. Therefore, it is tempting for her to seek one of those positions. Zeina being well-versed in Arabic, was among the selected for the jobs.
Hence, She returned to her original homeland as a veteran translator serving the occupying US army. Zeina, was happily presuming that she would be serving both of her two countries; the adopted country liberating the old one from the tyranny of Saddam. But things did not turn as anticipated.
She arrived in the country of her birth at that period of time when the trampled people of Iraq, realized that the invading Americans were not liberators,as claimed, but occupiers.. This was an unexpected surprise to her that conveyed shocking waves through her spine. Even more shocking was the attitude of her own Iraqi-rooted grandmother, full with patriotic zeal, who vigorously resented her granddaughter`s position serving the occupiers, and wearing the disgustful army uniform.
It is always expected in any novel that the main protagonist falls in love. Well, Zeina did. Unfortunately, her fall was different. It was an agonizing one-sided illicit unresolvable love with a member of Jaish Al-Mahdi ( i.e., Mahdi`s army ), who explicitly resisted all her seductions because she was his “ milk-sister ”.
The accumulated effects of the animosity of the majority of the Iraqi people towards the occupation, the steady bombardment of scoldings by the grandmother, and the failed love, shattered Zeina`s dreams and demoralized her. Consequently, she learned, in a hard way, the lesson of the incompatibility of being allegiant to both,of her two countries, of being a dog of two homes,unable to feel at home in either.
Eventually she left her lovely native land, which she aspired to serve, a shattered and torn country; and returned to America describing herself in her words as a broken mirror, a broken-hearted, devastated torn and drained woman. .

Listening to the chatting of people in a cafe might produce a more intricate or complex plot.
But the superiority of literary a work is not measured by the complexity of its plot, but by its abilities in portraying the personalities of its main characters, in producing in the reader some emotions, or in refreshing forgotten memories,
Let us put generalities aside. Kachachi erected upon that plot as scaffolding a beautiful edifice, and elegantly maneuvered through its different floors. She wrote a sentimental novel that holds you breathless until you finish. She excelled throughout The American Granddaughter in describing the ugliness and the brutalities of Bush`s War, and in portraying personalities of the characters of her novel. Moreover, Kachachi vividly described localities in a poetic prose, that made me longing to go back to my mother country. She chronicled events in a colorful dramatic phrases, some of which made me laugh from the depth from my heart, such as “ A nun who did not smell of the sweat of a man.”, and others that made me cry from the depth of my heart too.“

The prayers of Zein`s grandmother ignited memories of my own grandmother praying to the very same saints.
At first I thought that the novel`s title was ill-chosen. However, upon second thought I realized that the “ grandmother ”, though refers to a real person, of blood and flesh, carries with it another connotation as a symbol for the proud country, which was the cradle of civilization, the land of the thousand and one night, its famous two rivers, its homogenized multiracial society, its traditions, its culture, and its palm trees, etc.
With such symbolization, the novel's title would become more meaningful as the rebounding echoes of the rebukes and curses of the “grandmother” to the prodigal American granddaughter.
The death of the grandmother stands for the demise of Iraq as a country torn-apart by the devastating American occupation.

The author of “ The American Granddaughter ” had created Zeina in her own image.(that is Kachachi`s image) Zeina,then starts to wrestle with her creator; throughout the novel putting statements such as : “ I ignore the writer who is intruding on my space on my computer ”. Nevertheless,; Kachachi, on the other hand, by projecting herself on Zeina. was able to express in a smooth manner, through the lips of her protagonist, some aspects of her own biography; for example, her high school, her mastery of poetry her familiarity with movies and songs. She is to be envied for her capabilities

This was a book group choice for my Kutub book group - a group that discusses books available in both Arabic and English. Although the majority had read this book in English (translation), there was a distinct difference in the perception of the book between the two cultural backgrounds.

Zeina is a young woman of Iraqi parents, who left her country of birth at the age of twelve, to make a new home in America. Her father had been a radio presenter and the regime had taken him in for questioning and beaten him up. Her mother never really recovered from leaving her country behind and Zeina's Grandmother was left in Iraq, alone but for her faithful servant, Tawoos and her family.
After America invaded Iraq, there was a sudden need for Arabic speakers to act as interpreters for the army. It was a well paid job and Zeina felt she could help both America and Iraq by taking on a postion.

What follows is basically an analysis of Zeina's mental turmoil as she struggles between the beliefs of the Americans and the reality that she is surrounded by. Zeina's Grandmother is very resentful of her American soldier's uniform and feeels that her Granddaughter has sold herself out to the enemy. As the situation worsens and soldiers are being targetted, Zeina starts to learn the reality of war.

In the midst of all this, Zeina meets Tawoos's son, Muhaymen. He is referred to as her 'milk brother' as his mother had breast fed Zeina when her own mother was sick with typhiod. Zeina is smitten by him and the fly leaf for the book leads us to believe that this is going to be a heated romance, but this is a deceptive sales pitch and is not really what the book is about.

The discussion within the group highlighted certain different perceptions. Many of the Arabic redaers felt the Grandmother was sad, where we had interpreted her reaction as anger against Zeina. They could understand her behaviour, where we thought she should be more receptive to Zeina.
Similarly the relationship between Zeina and Muhaymen; we felt it lacked depth and was somewhat pointless, the Arabic readers pointed out that in Arabic literature there is much less spoken and much more assumed when writing of affairs of the heart; much is said just by a flick of the eye.
We were all in agreement that the central theme of the book was Zeina's struggle between her two identities, her love for two countries and the right or wrongness of the invasion.

I would have liked to have given 3 1/2 stars, reflecting my level of enjoyment as I read it. It seemed a bit 'thin', lacking depth in the characters, but it was worth reading for the questions that it raised and the interesting perspectives on the war in Iraq.

A very readable book

It's hard to critique a translated work. So much may be lost in translation.. However, Imaan Kachachi's book held my interest from start to finish. At first sight, it appears openly critical of America, but a closer reading suggests that the book is about identity, especially if an immigrant. I did feel,however, that some aspects were not developed in depth; for eg., Zeina (the protagonist's) love for a Mahdi soldier who she is thrown together with for just two weeks. However,this is just a small flaw. The American Granddaughter gives a true picture of current Iraq, and raises questions of patriotism, identity and belonging.

About the Author
Dr. Kurtz is currently Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Factor Chair in Molecular Nephrology at UCLA. He is a professor of Medicine in the David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Kurtz received his medical training and residency training at the University of Toronto. He completed his Nephrology fellowship at UCSF and a postdoctoral fellowship at the NIH. How music came to rule the world

This book is easy to read and endlessly quotable. It is not a book about music per se--there is no discussion of individual works, no musical analysis. It is a book about the social history of music, about how music moved out of the private home and out of the royal courts to become the immense professional and public enterprise that it is now. Blanning traces the long, gradual rise of the musician from lowly servant (Haydn composing to order for the Esterhazy family) to Bono (a master of the universe). Today musicians are among the richest people in the world and the author tells us in fascinating detail, step by step, how that transformation came about.

And he tells the story with really wonderful details. Just one example--he tells us that Liszt was the first pianist to play entirely from memory, the first to place the piano sideways onstage (he had two pianos so he could show both profiles!), the first to open the piano lid, and the first to devote a concert to music for one instrument. He invented the idea of (and the term) the piano recital. He was fabulously successful (and the father-in-law of Wagner). For those, like me, who don't follow rap music, he ends with some samples of popular rap lyrics that left me speechless. Every page of this book has something to say that you will want to share with friends.

For anyone interested in the social history of music, this is a great place to start.

Tis book may not revolutionize our understanding of music, but it is a very good choice as a gift for your musician (or music-loving) friends and family. My son is a composer, and rated it very highly.

The Rise Of Music

I don't like to start book reviews by quoting a paragraph from the introduction, but I think it's the best move here:

Status, purpose, places and spaces, technology, and liberation- these are the five categories I will explore to explain music's march to cultural supremacy. What follows is an exercise in social, cultural and political history, not musicology- no technical knowledge of music is required.

Often when I read a good book, I'm unsure whether I find the thesis convincing because I already agreed before I read the specific book (the book just reinforced pre existing belief) or whether the argument was just objectively convincing. In this case, i can firmly declare that both are true- first- I totally agreed with the above stated thesis before I picked up this book AND that Blanning- the Professor of Modern European History at Cambridge University- writes in such an objectively pleasing fashion that is hard not to get swept up in his five stage analysis of "the triumph of music."

When this book begins, musicians are servants and slaves. The examples selected are the German composers of the 18th century. At the beginning of Chapter one, musicians like Handel, Haydn and Mozart are writing their masterpieces at the bequest of various German princes, and for them alone. Over the course of the 18th century and into the 19th century, this model of musicianship is overwhelmed by the now familiar idea of musicians as cultural celebrity. A recent still-relevant example is Liszt- whose "demonic" piano playing inspired the kind of swoons a modern associates with the Beatles. This initial transformation from musician/composer from court servant to celebrity is embodied by Wagner. Wagner's triumph in German culture remains largely unequalled, at it is to Wagner that all subsequent musicians must look for a benchmark of "how far you can go."

The role of the purpose of music in the march towards triumph is the focus of the second chapter. Here, the point is embodied by a sub chapter heading "The Secularization of Society, the Sacralization of Music." Blanning described- in matter of fact fashion how music moved from being an Assertion of Power on behalf of a specific monarch, to an instrument used in worship, to it's more or less present state as a good to be consumed by the public in the form of concert. Along the way, music audiences were convinced to take music very seriously, a process referred to by Blanning as "Sacralization"(i.e. making something sacred) at the same time, the movement of music appreciation out of the court and into the bourgeois and working classed meant that the audience for music exploded.

Then he is on to the role of physical space (an interesting summary of work about how places to hear music became more 'church like' and how the number of places to hear music expanded to included venues for the middle and lower classes (specifically pleasure gardens and music halls in the late 18th century and 19th century.)

Finally, Blanning handles the role of technology- a subject I've written about so often here that I found his writing duplicative of books I've already read and a final, weak, chapter on the liberating power of music for disempowered minorities. On the whole, it's an excellent, recent summary of the ways in which music is a social project composed of composers, performers and audiences. Blanning assumes that music does not actually exist without all three individuals- music is a social experience, no matter what romanticists and their followers may claim. I recommend this book for anyone looking for a cogent thesis about the role of music in modern society.

At more than 500 pages, The Grand Illusion is a hefty tome that is jam packed with so much quality research and detailed information it could make your head swim - except it doesn't. Murphy masterfully weaves complex information with an easy readability- and sensibility- that makes TGI the rare non-fiction book that is actually hard to put down.

Our current "official" science denies the existence of such phenomenon as telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, human energy fields and the like - labeling them with derogatory terms like "paranormal", "metaphysical" and less formally "woo woo". People are taught to regard these concepts with a sort of hostile and superior skepticism and dismissal. Respectable mainstream research institutions and peer reviewed journals refuse to even consider the subjects. The common belief is that none of them have been successfully investigated or demonstrated by the scientific method.

I myself had never understood why this attitude was so rigidly held until I came across a passage in a scholarly article that said that the translation of the word "chi" (subtle energy) into English is "spirit". The line in the sand between science and religion that was drawn hundreds of years ago is still in play here - subtle energy and anything having to do with it is simply verboten in our secular sciences because it is perceived as "spirit".

However, the fact of the matter is that thousands upon thousands of rigorously conducted scientific experiments have been conducted that DO show the validity of these phenomenon. And numerous brilliant minds have investigated and explained how and why things like telepathy, remote viewing and distance healing work. This evidence has been swept under the rug, repeatedly, until it has become a towering elephant of unarguable data. Murphy does a brilliant job of throwing back the rug, pulling out the evidence (the depth and breadth of his bibliography is mind-boggling), and explaining how and why it all hangs together.

The explanation, ultimately, is a relatively simple one -the existence of subtle energy, also known as aether/time-space/the zero-point field/the implicate order/torsion fields/the Higgs field (and many other names besides): the holographic connective medium of pure potential and geometric patterning that underlies and connects all of creation. This element has been removed from our cosmology, leaving us in a purely explicate order of separate, mechanical things where there is no approved scientific mechanism to explain the "paranormal".

Murphy shows us that ultimately, it's all normal. He erases the line in the sand between science and spirit with matter of fact clarity, arming those with open minds and disarming the skeptics, bringing us all closer to the resolution of the non- beneficial and illusory science/spirit duality that in many ways defines (and contributes to the sickness of) our culture.

What a read! The Grand Illusion (TGI) is a masterful compilation of so-called 'paranormal'scientific studies as well as human testimony of psi phenomenon. He seamlessly synthesizes occultism with modern science and leaves us wanting even more. First, Brendan discusses consciousness: its roots and where we are today – informing the reader as well as synchronizing the reader for further discussion on the subject of consciousness. As psi phenomenon and the like are all rooted in consciousness, it is an imperative first step to lay this foundation. Brendan does this very well and even the mildly interested reader of truth seeker can easily understand the concepts he lays forth. After setting a foundation for the reader, he proceeds to utterly dismantle conventional science's eroding framework, giving us a blank slate to work with. I consider myself relatively versed on topics surrounding consciousness but as I read his expos� on conventional science, I found myself frustrated as indoctrinated belief systems within myself were starting to crumble. A few times I even had to put the book down. I consider this a great sign! After the reader and Brendan are on a similar wavelength in regards to the message he is trying to convey, the rocket launches. This book is inundated with interesting studies, human testimony, and a few jaw-dropping photos. Sometimes the amount of information can be overwhelming but the author recaps at the end of each chapter and also restates the significance of the chapter and how it fits into our framework as conscious human beings. One of my concerns prior to purchasing this book was that it would be a rehash of David Wilcock's enlightening Source Field Investigations. I couldn't have been more wrong. The two books are incomparable save for the fact that I believe both authors are attempting to expand mankind's awareness for a more promising, beautiful, and sustainable future. TGI is an incredible read through and through. The information, flow, and quotes that commence and end each chapter are all put together in an elegant paradigm-smashing fashion that will undoubtedly leave you asking more questions. Ultimately, we are all Truth and Infinitely Conscious Beings. This will never change, but sometimes our fundamaterialism is more deeply ingrained than we care to admit. This book helps to strengthen the interconnectedness between us all by turning the fundamaterialists most vital defense against itself: Science. Well done, Brendan. Looking forward to TGI 2.

a truly transformative book loaded with solid proof of the paranormal

If you habitually highlight, underline, or make margin notes in books as I do, you'll want to get your marker or sharpened pencil ready when you open this one. Australian Brendan Murphy has begun publishing his long-term research into consciousness and the nature of reality in this first (of many, we hope) volumes to come.
At 29 years of age, he says he's been involved for about 10 years in his studies to come up with this first of two books abbreviated TGI 1 and TGI 2. Reminiscent in my mind of Manly P. Hall who published his great opus at age 28 as part of his life-long pursuit of truth, Murphy appears to be carrying on the tradition.
He presents us with a myriad of both solid scientific and inarguable occult examples of the validity and repeatability of experimental findings linking leading edge physics with paranormal phenomena.
We first investigate the most up-to-date explanations of discoveries in science, from super-string theory to quantum entanglement and beyond. We then compare and analyse more modern day examples of psychic research that are establishing the truth of the "Perennial Philosophy" of mystics, saints, and yogis in light of those scientific findings.
Murphy quotes the late Dr. "Kit" Pedler, Head of Electron Microscopy at the University of London's Institute of Ophthalmology and early unofficial scientific advisor to the Dr. Who TV series: "[A] scientist would have to be either massively ignorant or a confirmed bigot to deny the evidence that the human mind can make connection with space, time, and matter in ways which have nothing to do with the ordinary senses."
One by one, Murphy takes us through chapters on subjects like Consciousness, Quantum Weirdness, Cosmic Oneness, Mystical Experience, the Occult Aether, the Superhologram, Chakras, Dimensional Planes, the Human Aura/Bioplasma/Bio-Field/Torsion-Plasma Field, Thought Forms, Telepathy, Clairvoyance, Psychokinesis, and more.
His references are so varied and so numerous one wonders how this young man had the time and fortitude to tackle such a wealth of information. But, it's all here, and, at least for me, at more than twice Murphy's age, it constitutes a starting point for my own further investigations. "Synthesis" in the subtitle is too modest a word. This is a "compendium," to say the least.
As usual, I want to relay some salient quotes from the book to give you its flavour and to encourage you to delve into this most extraordinarily strong and undeniable case for the reality of what is much more than just the everyday 3D world we ordinarily experience:
