Albert Mudrain�is the editor-in-chief of Decibel and the author of the cult classic Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore. He lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Interesting album choices, very well written

An essential read for all metalheads, from the same folks that brought you "Choosing Death", an indespensible history of death metal and grindcore. If you're a music junkie, you'll read every chapter, even if you don't know about or like the album being discussed. The albums selected are all worthy of the lengthy treatment they're given. Imagine condensing the "33 1/3" series into pocket-size essays on 25 albums, and you've got the idea. The problem is, they only write these reviews (in the book, expanded versions of articles from "Decibel" magazine) when they can track down and interview everyone associated with the album in question. The intro explains why several albums can't and won't be part of the ongoing magazine series. Also, if a band member is deceased, they won't choose that album (being as how they can't get a fresh "looking back" opinion from that member/members), so that explains why such artists as Metallica, Pantera, and Death are not included in their selections. Still, there's lots of info here, sure to please just about anyone who has listened to metal from 1980-on. Can't wait for a sequel.

A must-own for any fan of extreme music!

I found this book fascinating cover to cover. Being able to kind of see behind-the-scenes of the making of many classic metal albums has really made me enjoy them even more. There's not much technical audio engineering/production info, but more of the vibe of the recording sessions and how the songs were written and pieced together. Also, reading about bands and albums I had never heard before definitely made me go check them out and add them to my collection. Overall, an excellent reference book for any metal fan's library! Would love to see a Vol. 2 someday!

Ashbery's poetry, as Shoptaw demonstrates, is inevitably "homotextual" while refraining from taking homosexuality as a topic. Ashbery disorients his poems with unexpected silences, lapses or wrong turns in arguments, mock confessions, and sudden abstractions. As this book reveals, Ashbery's misrepresentations yield a richer and stranger representation of ordinary experience. Ashbery takes his paradoxical stand on the outside looking out of an American culture and history we recognize as our own.

Brilliant study and an incredible resource

This book offers an incredibly rich and densely historicized account of Ashbery's poetry (through Flow Chart), with a lot of attention to the various contexts (Ashbery's time in France, the New York art scene) and sources (poetry, fiction, art, pop culture) that feed into the work. But Shoptaw is not just a patient and scrupulous researcher; he is also, quite simply, one of the most brilliant and persuasive poetry readers I've ever encountered. Every chapter is full of revelations--this is a book to be read slowly and savored, bit by bit. Every reader will have personal favorites; some of mine are the stunning analysis of "The Nut Brown Maid" (constructed, Shoptaw shows, from discarded manuscript fragments) and the wonderfully textured reading of "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror," a poem I think I hardly was reading at all until I read it again with Shoptaw as my guide.

It's also worth noting that Shoptaw was the first critic to bring Ashbery's homosexuality into the story, not as a "hidden content" but as something that helps shape what Shoptaw terms Ashbery's "misrepresentative poetics." I often find other versions of this kind of criticism vulgarly reductive, but Shoptaw's readings, even when they draw on Ashbery's biography, always hold up--probably because it is so clear that it is Ashbery's poetry, not his life, that is Shoptaw's real subject.

In short, this book provides an unsurpassed introduction to Ashbery: learned, subtle, and intelligent (and engagingly written to boot). My main caveat is that it is not suitable for anyone looking for the one key that will all at once unlock Ashbery's difficult and protean poetry. Though theoretically informed, Shoptaw's study does not cleave to any single perspective or agenda; theory serves reading rather than the reverse. Indeed, like its notoriously elusive subject, the book is simultanously conservative and avant garde--as one might deduce from the back cover, which carries enthusiastic blurbs from both Harold Bloom and Charles Bernstein.

Poorly Articulated

I am doing extensive research for my master's thesis on Ashbery and this was by far the worst resource I could have invested in. My main complaint is that this book lacked coherence, though it seemed to have done thorough research. It did not clearly articulate ideas, but rather used every opportunity to quote fragments and attribute random details rather than clearly get at the heart of Ashbery's poetry. I found no useful arguments and it was very difficult to get through to what the author was saying. Very disappointed.

Shoptaw - On the Outside

I am alas an ordinary reader and I was curious to see what this Ashbery fuss was all about. I found Ashbery's poetry to be quite obscure and thought Shoptaw's book might help me make some sense of it. I was greatly disappointed. The book was clearly a tour de force of rank archanery. Shoptaw seems quite impressed with his ability to dazzle us with obscure jargon but it left me baffled. In the end I was no closer to understanding or appreciating Ashbery. To write that the "cryptographic process is indecipherable" is itself on the very face of it patently indecipherable. This book may impress fellow members of his academic cult but it did not speak to me and,I venture to guess, other ordinary readers.

Different approach to a commentary, but one that I will reference in future studies of Luke

I am always on the lookout for more commentaries. I have a core four in commentary series that I rely on, but I am always on the look out for more. Recently I have been introduced to Brazos Theological Commentary. Unlike the commentaries above, Brazos commentaries are not written strictly by Catholics or strictly by Orthodox or strictly by Protestants. I'm not sure how I feel about this, but I am willing to give the series a shot on a book-by-book basis. Today, I will be reviewing their commentary on Luke.

The Brazos commentary on Luke by David Lyle Jeffrey is one of the more recent volumes in this series, but the first one I have had the chance to study and read. I must admit that I have never heard of Dr. Jeffrey, and it was the endorsements of Scott Hahn and Matthew Levering that sold me on this being a worthwhile volume in a series, with which I am unfamiliar. It turns out that Dr. Jeffrey "is known as a medievalist and as a scholar of biblical tradition in Western Literature and art." He is also a professor or literature and humanities at Baylor. This shows in the way he approaches his commentary on Luke.

The first thing I noticed about this commentary is the format. Almost every commentary I own, has the Scriptural text at the top of the page or in a block quote before the commentary. This one does not, so you will need a Bible to reference specific passages when studying with this book.. Dr. Jeffrey opts for three versions of the Bible - King James (KJV), New King James (NKJV), and Revised Standard (RSV). I'm not a fan of the first two, but that's a personal preference. The second thing I noticed was that unlike other commentaries, this isn't a verse-by-verse commentary. I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, I'm used to the verse-by-verse format. On the other hand, sometimes you can get lost in the minutia of interpreting each word or each verse that you miss the forest for the trees.

It's hard to fully analyze and review a commentary, so instead of attempting this monumental task, I am just going to talk about one passage in Luke that I always enjoy reading and how Dr. Jeffrey discusses. When it comes to the scene of Gabriel appearing to Zacharias, Dr. Jeffrey points out that Gabriel's name means, "power of God" or "emissary of God." He also points out that he only is mentioned four times in the Bible, but each time it contains a messianic message. He also references places Gabriel appears outside of Scripture like 1st and 2nd Enoch and the Qumran scrolls. He then goes on to compare and contrast Zacharias' doubt with Abraham's doubt and how Abraham was humble and doubting, but Zacharias was more brazen and bold in his unbelief. Dr. Jeffrey calls on many sources in this one passage of Luke, such as St. John Chrysostom and Venerable Bede. He also dissects the language and shows how beautiful in symbolism and wordplay the original Greek is. This plethora of opinions (including Aquinas, Calvin, etc.) and examination of language pervades the entire book and adds a richness to it that other commentaries on Luke do not have.

Despite the unique approach (not form-critical, nor philological, nor verse-by-verse), this was still a solid commentary on the Gospel of Luke. It is clear from reading this commentary that Dr. Jeffrey cares very deeply about this book of the Bible and the message within it. For those unfamiliar with Luke, that message is found in Luke 1:1-2 - "to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, even as they delivered them unto us." I cannot say that this will be the primary commentary I reference when reading Luke, it has earned a place on my bookshelf with other commentaries I reference. And I will definitely reference this again and again, especially when the Church's calendar rolls back around to reading primarily from Luke. I look forward to investigating other volumes in this series as well to see if they are just as good or better.

Much to like. I love the depth and inclusion of the church fathers

There is much to like in this Bible commentary from Brazos Press on the Gospel of Luke written by David Lyle Jeffrey. Depending on the reader's perspective and expectation, Bible commentaries can be very "hit or miss" when it comes to reviews. I think it helps (it helps me) to have an understanding that there is no definitive or "one size fits all" commentary. While I expected this volume to be a solid work of interpretation, I was pleasantly surprised with the level of deep theology calling on the wisdom of the ancient church as well as the melding of some of the most brilliant contemporary theologians expressed in such conversational prose.

The premise of the Brazos Theological Commentary is to "read and interpret Scripture creedally for the twenty-first century, just as the church fathers, the Reformers, and other orthodox Christians did for their times and places." This premise makes this series unique in that it does not attempt to be completely exegetical or expository in nature, nor is it purely the playground for the seminarian and/or academic. I have already used the word "conversational" to describe the writing style, but I think a more accurate assessment might be to say that the book reads as though I were listening to a lecture. I read a lot of theological works and I did not find this the least bit intimidating to read or "stuffy" in my ability to understand.

The book is well documented with footnotes and bibliography. As I have mentioned, for a smallish book, as far as commentaries go, Jeffrey has included a staggering amount of references spanning all two-thousand years of the Church history. A reader who is unfamiliar with the writings of the church fathers and other influential persons in the shaping of the Church, will be treated to a feast of introductions... Ambrose, Augustine, Athanasius, Bonaventure, Calvin, Chrysostom, John Calvin, Clement and Cyril of Alexandria, Eusebius, Jerome, Josephus, Martin Luther, Origen, Philo, Aquinas, and John Wesley are just a few of the notable names the reader will learn from and this listing includes none of the many, many contemporary scholars.

I think Brazos has produced a winner with this commentary on the Gospel of Luke. I do not believe that it is a "one only" resource for the deep study of this gospel, but it might be a great place to start and with its impressive resource list, it might be the gateway to very rich studies. I highly recommend.

Deeply Insightful Well Written Commentary

Buying commentaries is a hazard of the job of preparing sermons. From that experience I have a generalization. Commentaries come in three strains: 1) those written for laymen and women which sadly tend to be insipid, 2) those written for academics which also tend to be insipid for completely different reasons and 3) those written by the author for his or her best student. Within a couple of pages you know what you have. The first two strains fail for similar reasons, neither respects the reader. Bluntly put, the commentary written today for the laity assumes that reader is an idiot. Unfortunately by adopting that pose they fail to actually teach anything. The academic commentary is not written for the larger reader. The larger reader is a necessary capitalist means compared to the true ends of career advancement and arguing small academic points to a small inner audience. Only the last strain is worth the time. The writer who has something large to say about a subject they love and is saying it to someone they respect and hope to influence.

The Brazos series of commentaries would have seemed to be the perfect place to have found that. It sets out unapologetically as a doctrinal and theological commentary. What that really means is adopting the presuppositions of the church and not the academy. You will not find within that framework detailed discussions about "what really happened" in miracle accounts. Nor would you necessarily find 80 page analyses about why the book was actually written by a "Lukan Community" in the 3rd century instead of by someone named Luke who happened to be the traveling companion of St. Paul. Nor a bunch of other non-sense driven by materialist presuppositions ashamed of the gospel. The series does not give its pinch of salt to academic deities. All of that should have created a fertile ground for good commentaries, but that has not been my experience with the series to date. Not that any prior books were bad, but many of the writers to date seemed to lack the true love of the subject or the exegetical task itself needed to stand out.

That string has stopped with this entry. Dr. Jeffrey is exactly what this series should be about. A man of broad learning and an evident deep love for the scriptures bringing that and a keen eye to the task. The author does not claim to be a translator or ancient language expert, so no translation in included. He mentions in his forward that he used primarily the New King James version. He wants you reading the text alongside his commentary. The author's instincts and eyes run to what captures the pastoral and layman's eye about the text, but with what seems to be an encyclopedic knowledge of what Reformed and Catholic tradition has said about it. Alas, for Lutherans like me the Great Reformer and his disciples get short sold, but that hardly diminishes the work. And in what is often a great gift to preachers, Dr. Jeffrey pulls from his experience as a literature professor wonderful pointers to great works of poetry, prose and artistic representations. Through these he often draws out a full deep picture of the emotional resonance of the text. If you want to know the narrow modern arguments, this is not the text. If you want a great guide to the Church's experience of Luke while reading it yourself, this is the book.

A Book Lover's Delight

Book lovers are introduced to the subject in an enticing way as Lewis' boyhood environment is described in the opening section:
"The house was full of books--I had always the same certainty of finding a book that was new to me as a man who walks into a field has of finding a new blade of grass--through all of these were the works of novelists, historians, essayists and biographers."
On researching their subject, the authors confess in the preface: "This colossal monument of paper contains many hundreds of letters from C. S. Lewis to his father, his brother, his close friend Arthur Greeves, and a few other family connections; it also includes dairies, sometimes kept with great minuteness, covering many years." So the challenge of condensing this data into book form was formidable. What adds to it is Lewis' quest for knowledge. He read widely and wrote prolifically. The result of this aim at telling the story of a masterful mind is successful, however. We know the essence of the man after having read this inspiring look at his life.

Very good, but not the best

This is a very good biography on C. S. Lewis by two men who knew him personally. They present an even-handed coverage of Lewis's life, weaving in discussion of Lewis's many writings. The biography is entertaining, even funny at times (how could a biography on Lewis not be humorous?!), but I'm afraid some of the humor is so British, that it will be lost on most American readers. A better biography, in my opinion, is Jack by George Sayer (who also knew Lewis). But this was probably the first important biography of Lewis to be written, and is very good in its own right. I'd recommend it for Lewis fans who want to read multiple biographies. But if you just want to read one, get George Sayer's.

Catherine - first Bestseller by Juliette Benzoni

I had read this book in my teenage time and fell in love with Catherine Legoix and her story right after a few pages.There are so many unforgettable characters whom I just adored. The story of Catherine and her love for the dashing Knight Arnaud de Montsalvy was Juliette Benzoni's very first bestseller. Juliette Benzoni was from then on my most favourite all-time author. ( I like to mention that she wrote until she passed away a few months ago over 86 very successful books !)
I belong to those readers who had to wait until each of the seven books was translated into English - my French at that time was not up to reading a whole book ! I could now go on and tell about the story - but I would like to mention here another matter! The Catherine books were published in Great Brittain and the USA in the sixties - and then never again. The seventh book in the series "La Dame de Montsalvy" never until this day translated into English ! Just leaving readers in the suspense for over 36 years if Catherine de Montsalvy was now a widow and had to bring up her children alone...
In 2015 to the great joy of the faithful Catherine readers the English publisher "Telos Publishing" started with reissuing the Catherine books after more than 40 years ! What propably no one knew, the English books did not have the complete text of the original French editions - a fact which was not even known to the author herself until I pointed it out to her a few years ago ! In BELLE CATHERINE there are 11 missing pages... I like to give my sincere thanks to Telos Publishing for the beautiful job they have done 1. for bringing back the Catherine books 2. for going to add all the missing text 3. for the beautiful Art Design and Cover design. Bravo Telos Publishing for your letting us dream again about Catherine and Arnaud. We all cannot wait to read the next books to come out...

more philosophic than how to advice

I found this book to be more "lofty and philosophical" than practical hands on advice, such as, "Sometimes if you join a chartiy you can meet people with common interests. The more you socialize with these people the more comfortable you will be in those settings" as opposed to other books which say, "go to charity events. If you can't afford the ticket go to the pre or post party or volunteer for the charity to get on the guest list." Also, the constant reference to prince and princess got a little annoying as did the typos. This book is FILLED with typing and grammatical errors. It actually makes me have little respect for the publisher who let this go to print. That said, there are some gems of wisdom on the pages of this book and if you suffer from a lack of self confidence or feel deep down you don't deserve to be treated and spoiled by someone else's money, this is the book for you. I regard this book more as a self help book to gain confidence than a meet a rich man book.

A delightful fun read and a charming, sensible, information filled, point by point approach to getting the man of your dreams. Ms. Spangler is so right on with her advice. She shares the lessons she has learned and observed through her own and girlfriends experiences while dating, in a clever tell all. She expounds things my mother told me that I didn't always listen to and should have. To find your prince charming, read and follow Donna's advice and pass this book along to all your single girlfriends!

The Ethics of Secular Humanism

At about the age of 23 I discovered for the first time that I had a mind. Previous to that, I had been more-or-less incapable of any sort of introspection. Smoking marijuana opened my unconscious mind and I felt like I was able to step outside of myself and see myself for the first time. I immediately started reading books other than adventure novels. One of the first authors I discovered was Eric Fromm. His thinking completely galvanized me. I thought that he had figured out all human problems, and all people had to do was pay attention. I knew essentially nothing about Freud, Jung, Marx, Nietzsche, and so on, and Fromm synthesized all of their thinking into a coherent system. Fromm championed the bogey-man of right-wing Christianity, namely secular humanism. The idea of which is that the foundations for value systems should be based on man’s autonomy and reason. In order to know what was good for man, one has to know the nature of man. Authoritarian ethics is an irrational system based on acquiring power over people. This strikes me as so self-evident that it’s incredible that it could arouse controversy. Fromm claims that one of the best tools for knowing human nature is psychoanalysis.

These days Freud’s ideas are commonly held to be erroneous, and some critics dismiss Fromm’s ideas as he relies upon ideas of Freud. This is nonsense. Freud was one of mankind’s greatest geniuses. While it is true that his motivations discoveries he made regarding human nature were physiologically clockwork, following the prejudices of his time, Fromm acknowledged this. Too completely dismiss Freud’s ideas on this basis would be like denouncing Kepler’s equations because he thought that planetary motion was caused by the “Holy Spirit,” or Newton’s theory of gravity because he explained it in terms of action at a distance.

Rereading Fromm forty some years later, I am astonished at the extent to which he and I think alike. No doubt, this is because I devoured his work at an impressionable time of my life. So I still think that his ideas should be taught in high school. One thing I’ve become convinced of over the years is that irrational devotion to dogma is most often the source of evil, whether the dogma is religious or political. Teaching young people to not enslave their minds to authoritarian dogma is simply sane.

Can there be an ethical system that does not rely on moral absolutes on the one hand or moral relativism on the other? Is there any other way? This book says yes and -- amazingly, brilliantly -- lays it out in a way that makes perfect sense. The only value we can know, the only value we need, and the only value that can have any real claim on us is OUR value, human value, and that is neither absolute nor relativistic. If this sounds absurd or offensive to you, skip this book. If you see the brilliance in it, you're in for a treat. I've read this book several times and can't get enough. Fromm is an underappreciated genius.

Good if using for individuals child

Good if using for individuals child, I wanted to use it for my classroom. Didn't work out that well. I ended up tearing out the pages, putting them in plastic sleeves, using an erase able marker, and using in centers.
