In the late 1980s and 1990s, rogue sociologist Venkatesh infiltrated the world of tenant and gang life in Chicago's Robert Taylor Home projects. He found a complex system of compromises and subsistence that makes life (barely) manageable. Venkatesh excellently illustrates the resourcefulness of impoverished communities in contrast to a society that has virtually abandoned them. He also reveals the symbiotic relationship between the community and the gangs that helps sustain each. Reg Rogers reads with great emphasis and rhythm. His lilting, cadence and vocal characterization of tenants is enjoyable. Rogers's first-person narrative establishes a deep intimacy with the reader. Venkatesh reads the final chapter, but he lacks the subtly and nuance that Rogers projects throughout his reading. The insubstantial author interview on the last disc mostly covers material already discussed in the book.

Adult/High School—As a young graduate student fresh off an extended stint following the Grateful Dead, Venkatesh began studying urban poverty. With a combination of an ethnographer's curiosity about another culture and some massive na�vet�, he gathered firsthand knowledge of the intricacies of Chicago's Robert Taylor projects. Early on, he met a megalomaniac gang leader known here as J.T., who became his mentor. Venkatesh observed and learned how the crack game works, and how many have their fingers in the pie and need life to remain the way it is. He observed violence, corruption, near homelessness, good cops, bad cops, and a lot of neglect and politics-as-usual. He made errors in judgment—it took a long time for his street smarts to catch up to his book smarts—but he tells the story in such a way as to allow readers to figure out his missteps as he did. Finally, as the projects began to come down, Venkatesh was able to demonstrate how something that seems positive is not actually good for everyone. The first line in his preface, "I woke up at about 7:30 a.m. in a crack den," reflects the prurient side of his studies, the first chapter title, "How does it feel to be black and poor?" reflects the theoretical side, and both work together in this well-rounded portrayal.—Jamie Watson, Harford County Public Library, MD

It was a wonderful insight into the reality of living in Chicago from the late 80's to mid 90's. Is the dialogue a little unrealistic? Sure, but in all honesty, I would have grown tired of reading slang, so I'm very grateful that he avoided that route. I am thoroughly looking forward to reading the floating city.
I'm not a terribly slow reader and I'm not the quickest either, but the chapters are long, so be ready for a marathon of reading. It is well worth it though. I feel like I learned a lot about my fellow man and about a class that works hard to remain a family.

This one is way better than Between the World and Me. Or you can say is the oppsite. The language is plain but appealing, little emotional expressions but strikes directly into your heart.

I also think the reason why this book is especially touching is because it's not only talk about the life of black gang members and those who once lived in Robert Talyor Homes, it also reflected the life of all poors, no matter he/she is living in Rio or Hongkong. And even more, you will find yourself in this book----you gotta face the ups and downs, meanwhile dealing with those rights and wrongs.

I was required to read this book for class but ended up really enjoying it. It reads as a fictional book however it is very true, as well as eye opening. A reprint of don Miguel's "Prayers" book.

If you already have "Prayers: a Communion with our Creator" you should know that the text of this book is identical. However, the former edition is in a smaller size and format. I like this new edition because, aesthetically, it matches the attractive binding of Ruiz's other books. So, if such things are important to you, go ahead and pop for this new edition. On the other hand, if you are new to the text, you should know it is not his best work; the meditations and prayers are reprises of themes that run through his books. I had much different expectations for the book than what it turned out to be. I suggest you check it out at the library before buying; you may like it more than I did.

I am a 62 year old recovering alcoholic. When I first got sober, (3 yrs ago), I got "The Four Agreements" and it transformed my life from one of lonely misery, to one of self love and happiness. The Circle of Fire is a great tool in my "one day at time" program of sobriety. Ruiz's teachings helped me far more than the Big Book in enjoying life being sober... So far it's funny and insightful

I just got the book, shipped to one of those Amazon lockers so I could get it on Sunday, that's so awesome! It's funny, insightful, and not too "PC" . While it's meant to be funny and tongue in cheek, the author brings up some scientific explanations for the "liberal mind" ,which, aren't necessarily true, but still point out what the stereotype libs do to frustrate the conservative. While he points out drugs and alcohol use may be more condoned by liberals, they are not used by libs exclusively, we know this, so you see the stereotypes are stretched a bit.
He explains the fantasy addictions libs have, with their love of music, movies, funny fashions, and fun and how they bring it to politics. Everybody loves music, movies, funny fashions, and fun, but liberals are known to be stereotyped lovers of arts.. Correct, or not, you'll understand his reason for stretching the fact that libs love fantasy. No doubt, you've heard the crystal danglers shouting "NO NEGATIVITY! NO NEGATIVITY!" when you question them in any way, or the libs that cry "Gibson!" when you say something they deem as "not pc" and look to ban you, as in banish, yes
The book is very funny and insightful, although, it gives you a such riotous look at the inside of the libs mind, don't take it too seriously, even when it rings true, which it does.

This book is fantastic! It provides a very insightful outlook on politics and all the operations taking place behind closed doors that the "common citizen" knows nothing about. John Hayberry provides a realistic view of what is happening in our country and what could result from this if some things don't change in the near future. This book contains a lot of political humor while still remaining very informative. Great read!

The Peretti Black Hole

The author of this series is Frank Peretti. Of all the books that he has published, this is one of my favorites. This story is about three Christians named Dr. Cooper and his two kids, Jay and Lila. They go on an archeological dig in Central America in the tomb of an ancient warrior king with strange guards called Mucay-Tochetin, that wander around the land that surrounds the tomb. There are also flying slugs whose skin has slime on it that is as deadly as acid! Will they all fall under the curse, or will the caravies get them? Although this book has no illustrations, Frank may as well have done them himself with his awesome writing. The suspense will kill you as you turn the pages wondering if all of the Coopers will come out of each adventure alive! I liked this book as a Christian because Dr. Cooper shows strong faith in God. He turns to Him in his most weak moments and receives strength in one way or another. I strongly suggest reading this awesome book. It will make you perspirate with fear! I have read the book many times and this is worthy of a Newbery award. May the curse stay away from you!

Once again, creepy, but cool

It's Frank Peretti's brilliant novel writing skills...condensed! It's a super-cool family of archeologists--minus a mother--who investigate phenomena in the spirit of Indiana Jones, only with a Christian perspective. A nice alternative to the gore and junk in the Indiana Jones movies.
This one will freak you out. A disease that makes anyone super-strong and loony as Michael Jackson (maybe even worse). This is one of the toughest battles the Coopers have had to fight before...can they survive The Deadly Curse of Toco-Rey?
The book is cool, but loads of creepy stuff. There's a lot action too. Definitely lives up to the Cooper Kids genre that Peretti has going.
Parental Warning: Almost Indiana Jones stuff here. Skeletons are everywhere, deadly, raving diseased people, Hostile Natives (of COURSE they'd have hostile natives!) and nasty "carvies". Pretty intense, but pretty cool.

Christian Adventure AT ITS BEST

I'm a huge Cooper Kids fan. Anyone--young or old--who likes adventure, will love these books. They are innovative and contain incredible plots. In this particular one, a motherless archaeological family plunges into the jungles of Central America to unearth an ancient--and utterly evil--Mayan secret. Surrounded by faceless enemies, they battle the sinister forces of nature and of man's depraved heart. This is an excellent book, tied with THE TOMBS OF ANAK. READ IT! (And check out the other CooperKids books, too).
