Second of two volumes of an excellent classic reference

This second volume in a two-volume set, is a classic advanced text on probability theory that, although possibly superseded by more modern treatments, still offers fresh insights into many of the more confusing aspects of the theory.
This second volume has a comprehensive and useful treatment of theoretical conditional probability that is still a go-to source for many of the formal mathematical details. The first volume has one of the best treatments of the Central Limit Theorem that can be found.
My only complaint is that the original version was in a single volume that Springer split into two volumes several years ago. The first volume is a poorly scanned and poorly-bound image of the original and the second volume seems to be of much better quality.

The subject of orbit transfer receives special attention. Optimal orbit transfers such as the Hohmann transfer, minimum-fuel transfers using more than two impulses, and non-coplanar orbital transfer are discussed. Patched-conic interplanetary trajectories including gravity-assist maneuvers are the subject of an entire chapter and are particularly relevant to modern space missions.

A Magical, Marvelous Midsummer Night's Madness with perhaps a bit of a dream or two in't

As endearing, imaginative, quirky, wise and rich in incident & character as "A Midsummer Night's Dream," this story of the great tsumani/tidal wave at Moomin Valley & what the Moomins discovered blends with a second theme: what Snuffkin's settling a deep & bitter score with the Park Keeper brought in the way of 24 small woodies who call Snufkin (Snufkin, of all people!), "Pappa.'

The drawings are splendidly suited to the text and vice versa. Never a wave so tidal, never a stage so full of high drama, and never Snufkin, Little My, the Filljonk and more brought more fully alive! This book was born to be read aloud, acted out, and literally, to be ROF & LOL at the humor, the wisdom, and the amazing what-happens-next in the perplexities.

It truly IS a Midsummer's Even madness, comedic, and the Moomins at their happiest. First off, cinders spot Moominmamma's fresh laundry, thanks to a far-away volcanic eruption. The eruption is soon followed by a tidal wave, swift and strong that drives all the family first on to their roof, then into a theater floating by. There in one of the funniest send-ups of The Theatre & iambic pentameter, the Moomins and their newest acquaintances---Emma the theatre rat, Whomper, and Misabel---enact a drama involving a lion.

Meanwhile, Snufkin pursuig a lifelong determination to put the demogagic, mean mean mean Park Keeper out of business, encounters Little My whose sister, the Mymble's Daughter, acutely says, "Little My can take care of herself. I'm worried about the people whose paths she crosses." Together, they pursue their revenge which involves---as noted---the acquisition of wandering, independent, unattached Snufkin by 24 adorable young woodies. Snufkin as an anxious pappa is a revealation & tender delight.

But wait, meanwhile, in the third strand, Moomintroll and the Snork Maiden who have been swept away in the flood encounter a depressed Fillyjonk, bringing their transformative love into creating a great Midsummer Night's bonfire than gets them into the clutches of a Hemulic jailkeeper!

And, and, and-----this just BEGINS the story! The tale so far is not a spoiler.

A joy for children of all ages, Jansson at her (and our) happiest and best! Yes, there are shadows yet while being terrified, miserable, anxious CAN be a feeling, it does NOT define one's life or one's own feelings with a little help from our friends.

Why is this book bowdlerized?

The book itself is very good, but the English version is sadly bowdlerized, with, for instance, the absurd result that instead of going out to pee, as in the original, the Musk Rat leaves the Moomin House in order to watch the stars, a highly uncharacteristic activity for someone who does not think anything worldly is worthwhile. There are several other similar changes in this book, and the others in the same series.

Beware....the beautifully imaginative and relatable stories will have you creating Moomin madness and purchasing the entire series. My children have Moomins everywhere and Thingumy and Bobbys silly language is the game of choice.."a buby as rutiful as you" is just too fun to say ...just once....
I love how the Hobgoblin choses to give wishes when he cannot 'snatch' the ruby. A touching statement to the good that can be in everyone...the scary and frightful enemies in our lifes can, and should, be humanized and empathized with.

About the Author

Gabriel Garc�a M�rquez was born in 1927 in the town of Aracataca, Columbia.Latin America's preeminent man of letters, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. Garc�a M�rquez began his writing career as a journalist and is the author of numerous other works of fiction and nonfiction, including the novels The Autumn of the Patriarch and Love in the Time of Cholera, and the autobiography Living to Tell the Tale. There has been resounding acclaim for his life's work since he passed away in April 2014.

Magically Real and Entertaining

Er�ndira is a dark fairy tale covered in the blanket of magic realism that has become Gabriel Garc�a M�rquez's trademark. The story itself unfolds like a bizarre daydream that follows a 14 year old Er�ndira as she is plagued by the "wind of her misfortune." It is this wind that causes Er�ndira to burn down her grandmother's lavish villa. Upon seeing the ruin and ashes the Grandmother informs Er�ndira that "it would take a lifetime to back the debt you owe me." And so begins the young girl's life of prostitution. In order to earn back her money, the Grandmother sells Er�ndira to countless men, day and night. It is only when Er�ndira meets angelic Ulysses that her tortured life seemingly begins to change. Perhaps the most brilliant aspect of this movie is the role of the Grandmother. She is continually seated upon a throne-like chair, is incredibly fat and gaudy and devours cake by the handful; all while dispensing cryptic advice to Er�ndira. The power that the Grandmother has over the life of Er�ndira is shocking yet morbidly interesting, as is she. This strong presence is the reason that her character commands the most attention in the story. Her greed and voracious appetite for life are quite possibly representative of the many corrupt and powerful organizations and politicians that are present in Latin America and throughout the world. Er�ndira is a compelling story to say the least. It is funny yet eerie, intriguing yet grotesque, and I thought it was amazing. Every piece of description and every word of dialogue work together to create the web of magic realism that dominates story line. If you like slightly dark stories of Latin American culture that have a magical twist, then Er�ndira should be your first choice.
