Chicago's forgotten moneymakers.
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
When discussing the history of Chicago, several things instantly come to mind. First, there's the incredible legacy of Chicago's overzealous, long-winded, power-struggling politicians from which the nickname "Windy City" derived. There's the glorious history of Chicago's world-renowned sport teams, and infamous gangsters and law enforcement, leaving the names of such notables as Al Capone and Elliot Ness forever associated with the city. Yet, the history of Chicago seems incomplete. A city with one of the largest African-American populations in the United States, there seems to be little to no history detailing the legacy of this group. Nathan Thompson has heeded the call and has written a detailed account of how Chicago's historical South-Side was developed and run by African-Americans, due in part to the policy kings and local number racketeers.

Thompson's extensive research brings to life how the game of policy, similar to the modern day lottery, was developed by African-Americans in the South and brought to Chicago during the great southern migration. Within a short time African-Americans from all walks of life were playing the numbers. Monies generated by the gambling catapulted key policy backers into some of the first African-American tycoons of the city. In turn, many of these policy kings reinvested in their communities creating economic independence and institutions still instrumental in Chicago's African-American community today. Yet, all was not rosy and peaceful, for large sums of illegally begotten money in the hands of the African-American policy kings did not go unnoticed by crooked politicians, policemen and notorious gangsters.

Nathan Thompson should be congratulated on his comprehensive research on the development and destruction of the policy game. Thompson has helped fill a gap in Chicago's history, for the African-American can no longer be conveniently left out when discussing the development of the city. The book is also a remarkable testament to the inventive, entrepreneurial spirit of the African-American, at a time when all other doors to economic prosperity were closed. Without Thompson's research, who would have known that the county's Lottery system was invented and perfected by an African-American.

A Key Chapter in Black History
By A Customer
Nate Thompson has done a fabulous job telling the story of the Policy Kings, the Blacks who invented the lottery and helped underwrite significant portions of black business with its earnings. While much of the action depicted is in Chicago, "policy" had its tentacles throughout black centers in America. It is a key history lesson that reads like a fast paced action novel - I could not put it down.

Worth Reading
By Stanton Braden
This is a great book. Aside from documenting the intriguing history of policy, it also confirms the origin of the Levin guitar that Django Reinhardt is shown holding in the famous picture taken after performing with the Duke Ellington band. Freddie Guy is shown strumming what is probably the same instrument in the photo section entitled "The Rhythm of Bronzeville."

From the Back Cover

Confidence. We want it. We need it. But it can be maddeningly enigmatic and out of reach. The authors of the New York Times bestseller Womenomics deconstruct this essential, elusive, and misunderstood quality and offer a blueprint for bringing more of it into our lives.

Is confidence hardwired into the DNA of a lucky few—or can anyone learn it? Is it best expressed by bravado, or is there another way to show confidence? Which is more important: confidence or competence? Why do so many women, even the most successful, struggle with feelings of self-doubt? Is there a secret to channeling our inner confidence?

In The Confidence Code, journalists Katty Kay and Claire Shipman travel to the frontiers of neuroscience on a hunt for the confidence gene and reveal surprising new research on its roots in our brains. They visit the world's leading psychologists who explain how we can all chose to become more confident simply by taking action and courting risk, and how those actions change our physical wiring. They interview women leaders from the worlds of politics, sports, the military, and the arts to learn how they have tapped into this elemental resource. They examine how a lack of confidence impacts our leadership, success, and fulfillment.

Ultimately, they argue, while confidence is partly influenced by genetics, it is not a fixed psychological state. That's the good news. You won't discover it by thinking positive thoughts or by telling yourself (or your children) that you are perfect as you are. You also won't find it by simply squaring your shoulders and faking it. But it does require a choice: less people pleasing and perfectionism and more action, risk taking, and fast failure.

Inspiring, insightful, and persuasive, The Confidence Code shows that by acting on our best instincts and by daring to be authentic, women can feel the transformative power of a life on confidence.

The Confidence Code
By GrannyJo
I would like to see everyone who teaches even one girl, young woman, adult female, etc. read this book. We need, desperately, to change the way women think of themselves. It took nearly 80 years for me to gain the self-confidence that my brothers seem to have inherited along with other genes. We must do better. There is a great deal of evidence to support my contention that our mental capacity is as good as or greater than our male counterparts. Let's do whatever is necessary to keep our females acting this truth. This book is a great beginning! Jo Seier-Doofe

It's not a total waste, but not very helpful
By Bpollen
I'm suspicious of some of the five star reviews of this book. If you check out their total reviews, for many this is their only review, and for others, they have just 2 or 3 reviews, all 5 star. And they gush a bit too much about this book. I'm having difficulty getting through this book because it's boring. It's mainly stories about wealthy, highly educated women, or celebrities, who expressed at some point that they felt lucky or unworthy, etc. There are other things in the book, and it is enlightening in some respects. But it's not geared toward helpful advice for the average woman. I agree with the several other reviews for this book that say much the same thing as I am saying. It's not a total waste of money, and if the stats apply to you, you may find it more applicable to yourself.

I did find one thing in the book that I am using, which is that women apologize all the time, whether it's justified or not. I've noticed that I do the same, so am trying to alter this. The response has not been great. The problem is, and perhaps the reason why, women appear to lack confidence and apologize, is because the response when they don't do that is not good. The goal is to get certain things, whether it's a job or a raise or congeniality in the office. I believe that women have learned how to win the end game through experience, and that experience has shown that the best way to do this is to APPEAR more subserviant and pleasant than you are. I saw a documentary once about how girl toddlers & boy toddlers are treated differently, and wondered why girls cry more than boys. You could see in the test that when girl toddlers cried in a child pen area, they got picked up more often than the boys did when they cried. So the girls learned that to cry is to get the result desired, and boys learned that crying did them no good. So the accomplished women in this book, for all their assertions that they attribute their success to luck or whatever, actually did achieve what they wanted, using precisely the things that this book is saying not to use.

Maybe the book changes a bit in the second half. If so, I'll update this review. Don't get me wrong...it's interesting. Just not a practical guide for the average American woman.

Surprisingly useful
By Chris
I bought this book awhile ago, before I retired, because I was in an ill-fitting job, a quiet introvert among a group of extremely confident extroverts, and I was desperate for help. I didn't read it at that time. I wish I had. I have never been good at self-promotion, but in a workplace full of those who are, it's necessary. And this book shows how reasonable and honest self-promotion is a good thing and not a display of arrogance. We think nothing of men pushing themselves forward and touting their accomplishments, but in women it's considered tacky.

This book points out how men learn, from childhood on, how to be confident, how to fail without feeling like a failure, while women tend to back away from that. Perhaps it is changing now, but that is definitely how it was when I was growing up. And worse, it was such a part of the social fabric that I never even thought twice about it. Women who talked themselves up were haughty. Humility was more attractive for women. But this left us vulnerable in the workplace, relegated to the back as men naturally push forward, and that is what the boss sees, leaving women's contributions unnoticed or under-noticed. I experienced this myself as, uncomfortable speaking up, I would hear others say what I was silently thinking and they got credit while I appeared mute and empty of ideas. Very foolish on my part. This book helps explain a lot of the thinking behind these types of actions and shows ways to change.

Truly, I thought this would be just another flavor of the day business book but I was pleasantly surprised. It is primarily aimed at the work world but contains information useful at any point in life. I'm glad I finally read it.

Life has been good to Becky Bloomwood: She’s become the top personal shopper at Barneys and she’s living happily with her boyfriend, Luke, in Manhattan’s West Village. But with her best friend, Suze, engaged, how can Becky fail to notice that her own ring finger is bare? Not that she’s been thinking about marriage (or diamonds) or anything.

Then Luke proposes! Problem is, two other people are planning her wedding: Becky’s overjoyed mother—who has been waiting forever to host a backyard wedding, with the bride resplendent in Mum’s frilly old gown; and her high-society soon-to-be mother-in-law—who insists on a glamorous, all-expenses-paid affair at the Plaza. Both weddings, on separate continents, on the same day . . . and Becky can’t seem to turn down either one. Can everyone’s favorite shopaholic tie the knot before everything unravels?

Another entertaining entry in Kinsella's unabashedly fluffy Shopaholic series. Life could not get any better for Becky Bloomwood, the irresistibly daft heroine of Confessions of a Shopaholic (2001) and Shopaholic Takes Manhattan (2002). She has managed to parlay her personal and professional passions into a dream job as a personal shopper at Barney's, and she and her wildly successful boyfriend live a life of relative peace and prosperity in Manhattan's West Village. Well, at least they would if Becky could manage to curb her extravagant spending habits a bit. When Luke finally pops the question, a euphoric Becky manages to entangle herself in another rather sticky predicament. Becky's cozy mum back in England has planned a homespun wedding for her only daughter on the same day for which Luke's frosty society mother has booked the Plaza in New York. Two weddings on the same day, what's a committed consumer to do? Chock-full of the charming antics and asides that made the first two installments hilarious best-sellers. Margaret Flanagan

Shopaholic Ties the Knot
The irresistible heroine of Confessions of a Shopaholic and Shopaholic Takes Manhattan is back!--in a hilarious tale of mothers and daughters, mothers and sons, and one blushing bride who just can't say no to saying "I do."
Life has been good for Becky Bloomwood: She's become the best personal shopper at Barneys, she and her successful entrepreneurial boyfriend, Luke, are living happily in Manhattan's West Village, and her new next door neighbor is a fashion designer! But with her best friend, Suze, engaged, how can Becky fail to notice that her own ring finger is bare? Not that she's been thinking of marriage (or diamonds) or anything...
Then Luke proposes! Bridal registries dance in Becky's head. Problem is, two other people are planning her wedding: Becky's overjoyed mother has been waiting forever to host a backyard wedding, with the bride resplendent in Mum's frilly old gown. While Luke's high-society mother is insisting on a glamorous, all-expenses-paid affair at the Plaza. Both weddings for the same day. And Becky can't seem to turn down either one. Can everyone's favorite shopaholic tie the knot before everything unravels?

Nail-Biting and Hilarious at the Same Time!
By E.P. Clark
So, I'm totally in love with the Shopaholic series, but this book was the one I had the most difficulty relating to. I'm still giving it five stars because I think it was really well-done, but the conflict in this one was difficult for me to deal with--almost TOO scary! I'd like to say that nothing like that would ever happen to me, just like I'd like to say that I'd never get into debt and throw away my bills without reading them, but...it's like reading about all my worst fears! I don't want to say any more and spoil the plot, so you, dear reader, will have to read it yourself to find out just what was so nail-biting.

Which is one of the achievements of this series. It seems so lighthearted and glittery, and it is, but it uses its surface glitter to tap into deep-seated fears and problems. How do you deal with the fact that you have recurring patterns of behavior that you can't seem to control and that repeatedly cause problems for you and the people you love? How do you deal with the conflicting demands of your family, your in-laws, and your own desires? How do you stop things that you've innocently set into motion out of a desire not to make things bad, but that are now threatening to blow up in your face? Becky Bloomwood is peculiarly like a figure out of classical or Shakespearean tragedy (snobs, stop your howls of outrage!), caught up in the inevitability of her fate and her character, it's just that her problems come wrapped up in Vera Wang wedding dresses. Technically there's so much to love here, despite a certain repetition that keeps repeating itself (haha!) as the series goes on, and scholars of literary technique would do well to study the apparent lighthearted effortless that Kinsella imbues her plot with, even as she draws subtly on tricks from detective and horror fiction in order to keep the tension ramped up to high.

Got tired of Becky
By Amazon-klant
It's not that I expected much really. I did read the first two books - more out of curiosity than anything else - and I must say, contrary to what I thought, I quite liked them. I would't say they were the best I've read, but good enough to read something between things.
This book however, was just plain boring. I guess I got tired of Becky Bloomwood. In fact, I don't really like her. I didn't mind before but somehow, in this book, she really stared to annoy me. I must admit that I did wonder at some point how she was going to pull the wedding thing off, but other than that I found myself skipping pages because I just couldn't be bothered. Which is something I seldom do.

I was hoping that this book would surprise me as well, but, all in all not that great for me.
I guess I'll not read the next books :-)

Becky rocks.....
By Shoeho
Okay, I admit I love Becky. She's an unrepentant uber-consumer, who seldom met a shop (not to mention a sale) she didn't want to dlve into. She only feels regret when she figures her husband is going to find out how much she spends on Prada. She's loving and generous, she just has a serious clothes jones--which she can well afford by this point. So nice to have someone who is not ashamed of herself for being a first world consumer. I know, I know, there are many serious issues out there, but sometimes we do need to be reminded roses still exist, even if we choose not to smell them. BTW, I work in a helping profession--I see enough misery at work, when I read, I like a little levity.

Learn jQuery UI from the horses mouth! It won't get better than this.
    By Rajesh Pillai
I got a copy of this book and really enjoyed reading this. Its a very practical book and code snippets and concepts can be directly applied to your work. The author has given in-depth coverage on widget and advanced UI customization.

This is a very handy book for those involved in heavy JavaScript development. Besides there is a good coverage on poly-filling HTML5 with jQuery UI.

If you are working with jQuery UI in your project then this book is a must reference for your developers. It will save you lot of time and the coverage on widget factory is a treat.

This book can be your go-to guide for putting jQuery UI into action
    By Si Dunn
TJ VanToll had two straightforward goals in mind when he decided to write this nicely prepared book: "I wanted to write about how to use the jQuery UI components in real-world usage scenarios and applications. I also wanted to tackle the tough questions for jQuery UI users. [Such as] Why should you use the jQuery UI datepicker instead of the native date picker included in HTML5? How do you use jQuery UI on mobile devices, especially in low bandwidth situations?"

According to the jQuery Foundation, "jQuery is a fast, small, and feature-rich JavaScript library. It makes things like HTML document traversal and manipulation, event handling, animation, and Ajax much simpler with an easy-to-use API that works across a multitude of browsers. With a combination of versatility and extensibility, jQuery has changed the way that millions of people write JavaScript."

The problem with popularity, of course, is that jQuery became widely employed soon after it was introduced in 2006. Users quickly created a flood of jQuery plugins that, Van Toll writes, "had inconsistent APIs, and often had little or no documentation. Because of these problems, the jQuery team wanted to provide an official set of plugins in a centralized location. In September 2007 they created a new library with these plugins--jQuery UI."

He adds: "From a high level, jQuery UI was, and still is, a collection of plugins and utilities that build on jQuery. But dig deeper and you find a set of consistent, well-documented, themeable building blocks to help you create everything from small websites to highly complex web applications. Unlike jQuery plugins, the plugins and utilities in jQuery UI are supported by the jQuery Foundation. You can count on them to be officially supported and maintained throughout the life of your application."

Well-written and well-illustrated, jQuery UI in Action reflects VanToll's knowledge and experience as a professional web developer and member of the core jQuery UI team.

The book is structured into three parts, encompassing 12 chapters. And it assumes readers have at least basic experience with JavaScript, CSS, and jQuery.

Part One's chapters introduce jQuery UI and "the ins and outs of widgets...the core building blocks of jQuery UI."

Part Two's chapters offer "a comprehensive look at the components of jQuery UI: twelve jQuery UI widgets (chapters 3-4), five jQuery
UI interactions (chapter 5), numerous jQuery UI effects (chapter 6), and the jQuery UI CSS framework (chapter 7)." VanToll explains how each component works and shows how to apply the knowledge to real-world applications. The example projects include: building complex webforms with jQueryUI; using layout and utility widgets; adding interaction to interfaces; and using built-in and customized themes to provide "a consistent look to all widgets."

Part Three focuses on "Customization and advanced usage." Here, VanToll explores such topics as using the widget factory to create custom widgets, preparing applications for production, and building a flight-search application "at real-world scale." In the final chapter, he takes us under jQuery's hood "to dig into a series of utilities, methods, and properties intended for more advanced usage of the library."

If you work with jQuery or are ready to start using it, take a good look at jQuery UI. TJ VanToll's new book can be your go-to guide for getting, learning and putting jQuery UI into action.

    The name says it all
    By Deshrek
The name says it all: the book is something you could put into action and apply to your web application development immediately.

I was working on a project to integrate some web applications when I got a copy of "jQuery UI in Action". Since the vendor's applications UI is using some specific HTML template system that seems clunky, ugly and hard to customize, I decided to give jQuery UI a try. It really made a difference after I followed the examples in the book as I was able to significantly simply the logic of my script while making the theme similar to the old web application the project is replacing.

The author has been using and developing jQuery UI for more than five years and it shows his in-depth understanding of jQuery UI in a easy-to-follow way of description. He used a few real-world examples to explain different aspects of jQuery UI that could be easily used for one's web applications. I ending up using a lot for my project from his datapicker part of the doctor's appointment example.

All the examples are very easy to follow with detailed annotations. The author stated in the foreword he tried not to make this a copy of API document but rather some real-world applications. The book definitely has achieved the goal.

What I also like about this book is that the author is very frank in comparing jQuery UI vs HTML5 and also the pros and cons of jQuery UI. And I found its appendices are quite useful. I usually use FireBug for testing my javascript but the online testing tools the author recommended definitely helps.

The book does not have too much information about generating dynamic data from database on server side. But that should not be considered a shortcoming as it is not directly related to jQuery UI at all and you could find tons of information for that elsewhere easily. In addition, the book does provide an example to use jQuery UI vs. GitHub web api.

Disclaimer: I got my complimentary copy from Manning's reviewer's program.
