About the Author
Clarence Bass, a lawyer, is the author of ten highly regarded books on bodybuilding, health, and fitness; in addition to the Ripped series and Lean Advantage series, they include Lean For Life, Challenge Yourself, Great Expectations, and Take Charge. His question and answer column, the Ripped Department, appeared in Muscle & Fitness magazine for 16 years. He now writes monthly for his website. Training since the age of 13, Bass is a former Olympic-style weightlifting champion and winner of the Most Muscular Man award at the Past-40 Mr. USA contest. He and wife Carol have an adult son, Matthew. They live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Clarence does it again

I've followed Clarence for over 40 years starting when he had articles in Joe Weider's magazines. Always consistent & always looking for a practical, efficient, healthy way to improve fitness levels. His book "Ripped" is a great addition. Its good to follow the advice of someone who has lived it in the public eye; Someone who has weathered all of the hype in the fitness industry to live a full and rewarding life. I'm turning 65 next month and am using Clarence's advice and wisdom to return to the best shape in my life. Funny how the medical community has finally gotten around to acknowledging the benefits of weight training over 60 years behind Clarence. This book will motivate you to get into the gym on those days when you have a dozen excuses not to.

I bought all three Ripped books. A little repetitive, but the information is valuable. As another reviewer said, you may or may not agree with low fat near vegetarian diet that Clarence Bass is following, but overall the principles laid out in the book are solid. The trick to fat loss is eating fewer calories. The trick to that is eating foods low in energy density, so that you don't feel hungry most of the time.
The most important point of the books is that Clarence Bass is the practitioner of bodybuilding, not "consultant" with degrees in nutrition and sports science and large gut. In his books he tells how he achieved the results, so the reader can take whole or parts of his method to get to his goals.

Lots of good advice

The main reason it didn't get five stars is because it billed as a general fitness book, but contains a reasonable amount of bodybuilder specific info. Also, lean for life, his other book, might be a better general buy. BUT Mr Bass gives a lot of good sound advice concerning diet and exercise that has helped me. Using his advice i've been able to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, which i didn't think was possible. I think that his plan is something i can follow for my life, not just a quick way to starve off twenty pounds. In the past i've had a very hard time building muscle but his prescription has helped. I think this book would improve the health of many people who instead yo-yo on fad diets of all kinds.
