About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

Harder than Larson's but definitely worth it. Every major topic in multivariate calculus is covered concisely. I suggest getting a supplemental text (such as "Div, Grad, Curl, and All That: An Informal Text on Vector Calculus" by H. M. Schey) because it will help you understand the concepts very well (which is what makes multivariate calculus so hard).

Can replace the main textbook if you're careful.

I'm in a multivariable class where most of the grade is tests and quizzes -- no homework is collected. A huge reason you snag the textbook in a class is to get the homework problems -- many of the tedious derivations of particular postulates or theorems are easy to find online. I still own the textbook -- Stewart's Early Transcendentals is good from single to multivariable calculus -- but I find that this companion study guide is the thing I'm referencing and dropping into my backpack far more than the large, unwieldy textbook. It gives concepts and examples for each chapter far more concisely, and paired with good note-taking habits in class make the larger textbook largely unnecessary. This text should be considered indispensable to students in a multivariable calculus course, and can replace the textbook entirely in situations where a professor does not assign homework.

Great resource. Looking at the examples before lecture and working problems after has rendered the textbook unnecessary. One of the best investments I've ever made.
