FROM THE BACK COVER:

"My name is Alice Ringwald, but the man who kidnapped me says that's a lie."

Thirteen-year-old orphan Alice Ringwald has no memory beyond six months ago. The only life she knows is the new one she's creating one day at a time with the loving couple that recently adopted her and gave her new hope. That hope, however, is shattered one night when she is abducted by a strange man. In a frantic FBI man hunt, the kidnapper vanished with Alice.

So begins Water Walker, a modern-day parable that examines the staggering power of forgiveness, and reminds us that it's possible to live free of the hurt that keeps our souls in chains. (YA)

By Kimberly
*SLIGHT SPOILERS*

In the the third episode of Water Walker Eden awakens, becoming aware of her slavery and the reality behind the lies she's been fed for over five years. She is stepping outside the boat and risking everything, desperate for freedom.

As we follow Eden along her journey, we find ourselves both fearing and cheering for her. Also, as we reflect on our own journey, in the light of Eden's, we are challenged to be water walkers too.

Part three of four: Water Walker
By Fire Dad ^6
What a crazy journey. The good shepherd is a wolf seeking to devour and control. Eden the innocent lamb is being used and controlled. Can she escape? Will she be rescued? How will the twisted leader of the flock punish her betrayal? I can't wait for the conclusion of Water Walker. Dekker has masterfully weaved this story to suck you into life in a cult. No one escapes. The Shepherd is watching, he knows. Over come your fears and walk on water!

Borderline (The Arcadia Project), by Mishell Baker

A cynical, disabled film director with borderline personality disorder gets recruited to join a secret organization that oversees relations between Hollywood and Fairyland in the first book of a new urban fantasy series from debut author Mishell Baker.

A year ago, Millie lost her legs and her filmmaking career in a failed suicide attempt. Just when she’s sure the credits have rolled on her life story, she gets a second chance with the Arcadia Project: a secret organization that polices the traffic to and from a parallel reality filled with creatures straight out of myth and fairy tales.

For her first assignment, Millie is tasked with tracking down a missing movie star who also happens to be a nobleman of the Seelie Court. To find him, she’ll have to smooth-talk Hollywood power players and uncover the surreal and sometimes terrifying truth behind the glamour of Tinseltown. But stronger forces than just her inner demons are sabotaging her progress, and if she fails to unravel the conspiracy behind the noble’s disappearance, not only will she be out on the streets, but the shattering of a centuries-old peace could spark an all-out war between worlds.

No pressure.

From School Library Journal
Millie Roper has been at the Leishman Psychiatric Center in Los Angeles for more than six months, having checked herself in after a failed suicide attempt that resulted in the loss of her right leg. She's visited by a woman who wants to recruit her for something called the Arcadia Project, which she describes as a nonprofit employment project partially funded by the L.A. County Department of Mental Health, but refuses to provide any more details unless Millie meets her the following day. Intrigued, Millie packs up her belongings (wheelchair, crutches, cane, prosthetic limb, and suitcase) and takes a cab to the designated location. Thus begins a roller-coaster ride through Los Angeles and environs, as Millie is tasked with locating a missing actor. What she doesn't realize until she's well into the case is that fairies and other magical creatures live among the residents of her reality and that one needs only a special pair of sunglasses to be able to see them. Millie is a delight—outspoken to the point of rudeness, with a wry wit and (despite her history) a healthy sense of self-preservation. The supporting characters are a motley crew, all with physical or mental issues of some kind and of varying ethnic backgrounds, and the story is an entertaining mix of fantasy and mystery noir. VERDICT Most comparable to Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files," this should appeal to his fans as well as followers of Charles de Lint and MaryJanice Davidson.—Marlyn K. Beebe, Los Alamitos, CA

Fascinating mixture of mental illness and magic
By lisaleo (Lisa Yount)
Millicent Roper, formerly a promising young director of independent films, suffers from a mental illness called borderline personality disorder. Though not as devastating as schizophrenia, Millie’s problem was severe enough to lead to a suicide attempt—a jump from the roof of a seven-story building—that resulted in the amputation of both legs, considerable scarring, and the insertion of metal plates and pins throughout her body to repair her many broken bones.

Living voluntarily in a psychiatric treatment facility after recovering from her fall, Millie is startled when a well-dressed stranger, Caryl Vallo, visits and offers her an ill-defined form of employment if she will leave the facility and move into a residence run by the mysterious Arcadia Project. Millie chances accepting Caryl’s offer and soon learns that the Project’s job is attempting to manage relations between the Fey (as it is spelled here) and the human world, which some of the fairy folk choose to live in for extended periods—in this case, the section of that world that comprises Hollywood. (That would explain a lot about the movie capital.) She also learns that the Project likes to employ mentally ill people as its human agents, so it’s no surprise that the other five dwellers in the residence are as screwed up as she is.
I particularly liked two things about this book. The first was the characters; Millie, Caryl, Teo, and the others are complex, interesting, and appealing. The second was the steady way in which the author fed in a great deal of information about complicated subjects such as the nature of borderline personality disorder (not likely to be as familiar to most readers as, say, bipolar disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder), the rules governing the relations between Fey and humans, and the care and operation of prosthetic legs. I can’t judge the accuracy of the information, but it was consistent and “felt right.” The writing was well handled, too. For instance, Millie (who narrates the book) says:

“Most Borderlines are virtually incapable of a sincere apology. Tell a Borderline she has hurt you and she responds with a list of ways you’ve hurt her worse. Why? Because in a ‘split’ world, someone has to wear the black hat, and for a person with suicidal tendencies, avoiding guilt is quite literally a matter of life and death.”

I was glad to see signs that the author is planning further books about the Arcadia Project, and some threads were left dangling in preparation for that, but the story in this book was well wrapped up, which is not always the case when sequels are in the works. I will look forward to reading the sequels when they appear.

Edgy Urban Fantasy, Revitalized and Relevant
By Jennifer Silk
Film student and indie director Millie, who lost both her legs in a suicide attempt a year earlier, has been languishing in a mental health facility with no concept of how to move forward with her life. She has been diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder and must navigate through life with two prosthetic limbs and extreme and violent mood swings to contend with. When a woman visits her, offering work in a mysterious organization called The Arcadia Project, Millie jumps at the diversion packing her wheelchair and few belongings into a cab and heading back to Los Angeles to accept the position.

I loved this book. I had just about given up on Urban Fantasy as a genre, finding the same formulaic heroines, following the same formulaic patterns, frankly boring. This book was recommended to me by someone who has never liked urban fantasy at all. He told me that the heroine was disabled and suffered from a mental health disorder and I had to at least check it out. I've read plenty of 'damaged' heroine urban fantasy and was not expecting much but I was in for a welcome surprise. There is no damaged heroine stereotype at play here. While the realities of the heroine's physical and mental challenges are not downplayed, neither are they played on for drama or for sentiment.

Of course, their is magic, and (gasp!) Fey! But these things didn't ruin the gritty realism of the novel at all. The book is far more of a mystery novel with Millie as an up and coming hard boiled detective in the LA film industry than with only a pleasing veneer of magical dressings. The best moments in the book are where Millie faces down someone who has placed her in a box because of her disability.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves urban fantasy but has been looking for some revitalization of the genre. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

Great action, and a unique hero
By Maria A Guglielmo
A fast-paced and engaging read, BORDERLINE manages to give readers a fresh take on some tropes of Urban Fantasy (the Fey live among us, a secret organization seeks human recruits to deal with the paranormal problems that arise,etc.). The success of the book lies mostly in its fantastic character development of the hero of the story, a woman suffering from borderline personality disorder who is recovering from severe injuries she suffered in a suicide attempt. The rest of the cast didn't rivet my attention the way Millie did, but the writing is excellent, and the book is well-paced and compelling. The novel does a great job featuring an engaging POV character with both physical disabilities and a serious mental health problem. The book has a standard amount of violence, and some sexual content. It would be best suited for adult fantasy readers who like the urban fantasy subgenre, although some older teens might also enjoy it.

Gypsy Holocaust
By Mary E. Young
Roman Mirga and his family leave the city to return to their family clan when they discover that Gypsies are being rounded up and relocated to camps for extermination. At first the clan does not believe him but the relocation of a nearby gypsy group convinces the group to flee. As they travel to the Hungarian border, many gypsies are lost along the way. Upon reaching Hungary, they are able to spend nearly a year wandering up and down the country. However, when Germany invades Hungary, the gypsies are rounded up and sent to Auschwitz. Once in Auschwitz, Roman becomes a translator for Dr. Josef Mengele while his father plays the violin to calm the Jews as they enter the crematoriums. Moving, this is an interesting look at an often overlooked group targeted during the Holocaust.

Great combination of mystery, suspense, and romance
By Rick R. Reed
I loved this book. It's the kind of book that leaps from the pages and lands squarely in one's imagination. Put another way, Diana Copland's prose is so effortless that you forget you're reading and are transported into the world she creates. And what a world! By turns chilling, haunting (literally and figuratively), and engrossing, Copland knows how to mix up the love story, the horror story, the thriller and turn them into one compelling and thoroughly satisfying read.

Excellent read!
By L. Ferdig
I was very excited to read this book. I know the author, and her style of writing, and hoped that that style would translate into original fiction.

It does. And how!

The premise, that of a police officer being guided to the body of a child by that child's ghost, is one that could lend itself to parody quite easily in the hands of a clumsy, untested author. Not only does Copland handle this delicate subject matter with care and compassion, she immediately pulls you in for the ride. The characters are well drawn, engaging, funny, and, in one case, annoying as hell. But that's part of telling a story. You don't have to love all of the characters, but you have to listen to them, because they each have something to say.

Det. Matt Bennett is your not-so-average cop: hard-nosed, pragmatic, believing in what he can see and feel and hear. So when that very system is challenged by the ghost of a six year old girl, he does something that, in ordinary circumstances, he never would. He tells what he saw. Big mistake. In an effort to pull Matt out of his funk, Sheila, his best friend, sister-in-law and resident pain in the ass, drags him to see a cable tv medium, Kiernan Fitzpatrick. Kiernan is a young man with the energy and spirit of a twelve year old on a perpetual sugar high. Witty, irreverent, with a suitcase full of t-shirts bearing sometimes inappropriate messages, Kiernan is easy to like. When it comes to his 'gift', that of communing with the souls of the departed, Kiernan is compelling to watch. Even the most disbelieving of people would be hard-pressed to deny what he is able to do. When he approaches Matt with a request for a private audience, Matt, and the reader begin a journey of discovery that keeps you turning the pages, deep into the night.

There is humor, heartbreak and romance, doled out in equal measures. But make no mistake, this is not your average three-quarters smut to one quarter plot. In fact, you're over two-thirds into the story before any sex happens. This is the downfall of many a would-be good story-sex over content. Not so here.

I was hooked from the first page, and almost sad to reach the end. By then, the characters felt like family. Pick this up and read it. You won't be sorry.

4.5 stars
By K. Branfield
If you are a fan of paranormal ghost stories, then you are going to love Diana Copland's A Reason to Believe. It is a captivating mystery starring Matt Bennett, a police detective who is quite skeptical of psychic phenomena and a famous medium, Kiernan Fitzpatrick.

Matt Bennett is no stranger to tragedy and he is still recovering from a traumatic loss of his own when he is called to the scene of a missing young girl. Matt is led to the victim's body by an unlikely source: the ghost of the victim, Abby. With his career already on the rocks, he is placed on administrative leave when he admits Abby's spirit led him to her body. In an attempt to help him understand what he experienced, his sister in law and best friend, Sheila, takes Matt to "A Paranormal Gathering" where Kiernan Fitzpatrick is conducting psychic readings. With Kiernan's (and Abby's) assistance, Matt is soon hot on the trail of a killer.

The two protagonists of A Reason to Believe are fully developed, three dimensional characters. Both men have complicated pasts and although their personalities are complete opposites, they perfectly balance one another. Matt is a no-nonsense and slightly cynical cop with a sharply analytical mind who does not believe in communing with the dead despite his experiences to the contrary. Kiernan is light-hearted, full of energy and the more impulsive of the two. He is comfortable with who he is and completely at ease with his psychic abilities. The chemistry between the two men is sizzling and their relationship positively simmers with sexual tension.

The mystery aspect of the storyline is very well done. Although I was able to guess the killer's identity fairly early on, I was completely stumped as to the motive for the murder. But what I really enjoyed the most about A Reason to Believe is the paranormal element of the plot. While I am not a fan of paranormal stories with shapeshifters, vampires, etc, I do love a good ghost story, and I can honestly say that Ms. Copland far exceeded my expectations with this part of the storyline. Kiernan's psychic readings were just incredible and Abby's ghostly appearances were spooky yet very moving.

A Reason to Believe is an outstanding read that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense. It is an incredibly sexy romance with absolutely delightful cast of characters and a compelling mystery. Diana Copland is a fabulous author and I am crossing my fingers that we will see more of Matt and Kiernan in future books.
