A Great Resource for Commercial Real Estate Brokers

I have been in the commercial real estate brokerage, development, investment, and consulting business for 36 years, and I often receive inquiries from brokers in my market that are referred to me for professional and career advice. Most of these referrals come looking for me to reveal to them "secrets to success" in the business, but I disappoint many by giving them a list of books and other resources to read that I believe can help them greatly.

For full transparency and disclosure, I am not related to Mr. Umansky, nor have I ever met him or spoken to him by phone. Over the years, however, I have read many how-to real estate books in an attempt to further my quest for professional self-improvement and to identify resources to refer to the people who seek my professional advice and counsel.

Value Added is now at the top of my resource list--the book is easy to read and its contents provide an excellent outline and framework of essential knowledge for people entering the commercial/investment real estate brokerage business and for veteran brokers wanting to refocus their careers.

Through each of the sections and topics, the author provides the primary considerations for different aspects of the business, while interspersing the topics with helpful tips, suggestions, and observations. In short, the author provides a critical path for brokers to follow. Each section and subsection provides macro advice and a good starting point for further investigation and study.

Look past the fear of the counterfeit because the genuine is worth finding.

Jonathan Welton's New Age Masquerade presents a wonderful bridge to believers understanding some of the occult practices while at the same time opens their eyes (and challenges them) to greater supernatural experiences that God has opened up to His children being in Christ. From the very beginning you get the sense that it pains Jonathan to see so many people, especially young people who are interested in the supernatural get turned off by the Church because they have, at large, not been walking in the power that Jesus Himself walked in. The author makes very clear from the beginning that he is no way encouraging anybody to adopt New Age practices because it is without relationship with God through Jesus. However, he is just as vehement about looking past the counterfeit powers that the New Age uses and pulling out the genuine (through many scriptural examples) that includes believers walking in even greater power than what the New Age can do.

Like all of his books, it is very simply and clearly written. The 1st section reviews many of the pioneers of the new age movement when it first started and how many of them were involved with Christian influences to some extent. I agree with Jonathan when he says that Davies had a prophetic calling, and if the Church had responded differently than with fear, things would have turned out dramatically different.

The 2nd section details different power encounters in the Old and New Testament including different events involving Moses, Joseph, Daniel, Elijah, Peter, and Paul. Over and over, Jonathan makes the strong distinction that these encounters in the New Covenant are about loving people and setting them free. "Pursue love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts." The New Age seeks power for personal gain and reward. Believers are anointed with power from the Holy Spirit through personal relationship with God through Christ to show God's love for others and turn their hearts to know Him personally.

The last section in my opinion, is why you should get the book and re-read it over and over again. Jonathan compares and contrasts succinctly dozens of New Age terms and abilities with the Christian faith, always being sure to cite Scriptural evidence for what believers have access to, in spite of the occult using it as a counterfeit. I understand this list is very comprehensive, especially for contrast. However, I personally would have liked to hear more testimonies of some of these supernatural experiences happening to believers today. I understand that the book is not to be a comprehensive encyclopedia of sorts, but mostly to wet your appetite for the supernatural and bring understanding and love to those who are involved in these sorts of occult practices. Overall, job well done again, Mr. Welton, or should I say Dr. Welton : )

God and the New Age

Jonathan Welton's book “New Age Masquerade” argues that the paranormal phenomena associated with New Age, occultism, Satanism, Spiritualism or Wicca aren't necessarily “false” in the sense of not being real. They *are* real, but inspired by Satan and demons. More controversially, Welton also argues that one shouldn't reject paranormal phenomena just because their New Age versions are demonic and dangerous. Rather, such phenomena are counterfeits of divine powers and miracles. The demons are attempting to mimic God. By using spiritual discernment and trusting in Jesus as Lord, the Christian believer can embrace supernatural powers and happenings which truly are divine, while rejecting and confronting the counterfeits. Welton also believes that the Church has become irrelevant to youth due to its de facto rejection of the supernatural, leading young people to embrace occultism, Wicca and similar traditions. I assume Welton is a charismatic Christian. His ultimate goal is to evangelize and save New Age believers.

“New Age Masquerade” is essentially a mini-encyclopedia of various New Age, Spiritualist and occult claims, and the author's Christian commentary on the same. Some phenomena he rejects wholesale, thus he doesn't believe in zombies. Usually, however, the paranormal comes in two distinct versions, with the Biblical version always being the true one. God's prophecies are true, New Age prophecies are false. The divine version of the occult “Akashic Record” is the Book of Life mentioned in John's Revelation, accessible only through the power of divine revelation. Only true prophets can properly interpret dreams from God, etc. So far, the author is relatively uncontroversial, since few people would deny that, of course, some “prophets” are phony. The same is true of angels, the real ones being God's messengers, the false ones being demons in disguise.

What many Christians would find objectionable in Welton's book, I think, is that he accepts a long range of paranormal claims which are often seen as entirely demonic (or not real in any sense). Thus, the author accepts levitation, teleportation, telekinesis, orbs, trance states and out-of-body experiences. He believes that these phenomena can come from God. Miraculous healing through objects that have come in touch with a holy person is accepted. The objects are powered by the supernatural energy from that person. For some reason, he doesn't mention scrying or divination by the casting of lots, but he could have, since both activities are described in the Bible. He does mention and accept dowsing. Welton's view of astrology is less clear, since he indicates that God sometimes uses astrology for revelatory purposes, as when the Magi (who were astrologers) saw the Star of Bethlehem. Overall, however, he is more disdainful of astrological prediction.

It can hardly be denied that all of these paranormal phenomena do occur in the Bible. Many of the author's proof texts are about Elijah and Elisha. Others deal with Jesus or the apostles. Some Biblical miracles are extreme even by New Age standards (or indeed Charismatic standards), such as the claim that the deceased prophet Elisha's bones were so imbued with supernatural energy that dead people thrown into his tomb where immediately resurrected! Of course, cessationists will question the theological basis of “New Age Masquerade”. Note also that Welton believes that all believers today can acquire supernatural powers, while the Bible seems to limit them to specially anointed prophets and apostles…or to Jesus.

This little book never explains how we are supposed to distinguish between the real and the counterfeit. Aren't some Christians “counterfeit”, as well? Catholics or Mormons, perhaps? How can we tell them from the real thing? What about the local friendly neighborhood witch (or Buddhist dowser), who seem happy and contended? Are they really under the spell of demons? Since Welton says very little about these issues, his sole criterion for what's divine and what's demonic seems to be the dogmatic conviction that his (unspecified) brand of Jesus people have it all worked out.

Personally, I think the book became a bit tedious after a while, due to its encyclopedic style. Eventually, I nevertheless decided to give it the OK rating. If it will convince the New Age crowd still remains to be seen…

This is an outstanding discussion - completely free from either paranoia or obsession - of what is often called the New Age Movement, and what Christians can learn from it. The primary lesson is that the components of the New Age Movements are often counterfeits. And if they are counterfeits, then they are counterfeiting something real. Our job is to search out the real, and the author leads the reader in the process, while permitting the reader to form his or her own opinion.

Dr Welton's research is, as usual, meticulous, complete (and well documented).

Brilliant book.

A great finale to Laurie's story!!!

Embrace is the best of endings for Laurie's story. At times throughout the story I cried crocodile tears. By the time I finished I was pleasantly surprised with the journey that Laurie had taken and where she ended up. Embrace is endearing, passionately, and leaves a message of forgiveness and redemption. The actions that occurred in the marriage were destructive, but in the end lessons were learned for both Laurie and her husband.

I usually don't get overexcited about books dealing with cheating. Entice and Embrace represent much more than that. How S. Layne dealt with the story line, character definitions, conflicts, and resolutions gave Embrace such a high rating. The story was more than surviving the damage of an affair, it was about thriving in midst of the tidal wave of destruction.

I loved how S. Layne defined the characters in the story. Take Laurie for instance. When Laurie first found out about her husband's indiscretion, she was weak and made decisions based upon emotions. Very poor decisions in fact. Then we have her husband James who knew he did wrong but made no corrections to chance the environment he was in. Finally, we have Liam who was a non-committed sort of person that provided Laurie with the recognition that she was attractive as her self-worth had been hit. As the story progresses we get to see a change in the characters. Laurie starts to learn to thrive on her own. James takes a lesson in selflessness. Now Liam, he kind of kept fighting harder to keep Laurie. She was almost like a possession to him. I had no idea which way the story would go. What I knew was that Laurie and James were growing up and learning from their mistakes. I liked how S. Layne did that with the characters. We are able to see a new side to James, Laurie, and Liam.

S. Layne also keeps the flow of the story well-paced. Readers get just enough background information to not overwhelm them. Then from there we see the inner struggles that occur from being the transgressor and the one wrong. I believe watching the characters fight the devastation and overcome hurdles was a huge plus. I felt like I was sitting right beside the character feeling what they were feeling, even James and Liam. As far as reading the debate going on in Laurie's head made me want to cry when she cried, get angry with her, and laugh when she laughed.

Keeping everything I just mentioned in mind, I give Embrace a solid 5 STAR rating. It was a novel that is worth the time spent reading. One suggestion though; block a certain time for reading Embrace for once you start you will want to keep reading until the end.

Great follow up to Entice!

“How and I supposed to win a battle when I don’t know what I’m fighting?”
“I’m not something to win,” I whisper, although my words are clear.
He shakes his head once. “You’re everything.”

I thought this book was an awesome follow up to Entice, I wasn’t sure which way the story was going to be taken but I really loved where it ended up going! This book picks up pretty much right where the first book left off after Laurie learns of the latest betrayal at the hands of a man (or men) she trusted. I won’t say what it was in case you haven’t read Entice yet but it’s left her again in a position where she’s questioning everything and left having to figure out what to do to move forward. I don’t envy her for the situation she was in and the choices she is now facing but I felt that she handled it with such strength and I really respected her and her decisions.

At the end of the first book I was conflicted with which team I was on and who I wanted her to end up with. On the one hand we have the familiarity of James, her extremely apologetic yet one-time unfaithful husband, with whom she had been with since they were teenagers and whom she still loves despite all that’s happened. And on the other hand we have the sexy and mysterious Liam that she shared several steamy nights with trying to forget the mess that was her marriage. Much like her I was very torn between the man she’s always known and the prospect of the new and unknown.

When a family emergency comes into play she discovers which man will stand by her side and help her pick up the pieces. I have to say, I was not expecting it to go the way it did but I am sooooo happy with her choice. By about 25% into the book I knew who I wanted her to end up with, so I was very happy it turned out the way it did. It was all so believable and I know that if I were in her shoes I would have done the same thing, which really helped me connect with Laurie and with the story as a whole.

As I’ve come to expect from S. Layne/Stacey Lynn, the writing was so strong and even though the book wasn’t overly long, it was packed with emotion. I finished the book last night and even now, I get a little emotional sitting back and thinking of Laurie’s journey. As a married woman, I think this book is a little scary to think about because no one wants to find themselves in Laurie’s situation and putting yourself in Laurie’s shoes is a hard place to be but Ms. Layne not only heals Laurie’s heart by the end of the book but she also healed the reader’s heart along the way.

I really enjoyed this book, both books actually, and I look forward to Talia’s story. I also hope that we get more from a certain other character from this book because there is still a lot I want to know there!

A MUST read for all!!!

I think I may have loved this book better then the first one (Entice) if that's even possible!!! In Entice we left Laurie on the fence on how to move forward with her life! She had her (ex) husband, James and Liam both in the picture. This is a continuation of that story. We are able to follow Laurie's journey through life, love and eventually happiness.

This book filled me with so many emotions! I loved, I hated then I loved some more. It goes to show that we are just human and make mistakes. It's how we recover from those mistakes and our actions that mean the most. I'd actually give this higher then 5 stars if I could because I loved it THAT much and I think everyone should put this on their to be read list!!

Karen Timberlake is Professor Emerita of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. In addition to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry: Structures of Life, Fourth Edition, she is also the author of Basic Chemistry, Third Edition, and Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Eleventh Edition with the accompanying Study Guide, Selected Solutions Manual, Laboratory Manual, and Essential Laboratory Manual.

Professor Timberlake belongs to numerous science and educational organizations including the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). She was the Western Regional Winner of Excellence in College Chemistry Teaching Award given by the Chemical Manufacturers Association. In 2004, she received the McGuffey Award in Physical Sciences from the Text and Academic Authors Association for her textbook Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, eight edition, which has demonstrated excellence over time. In 2006, she received the Textbook excellence award for the first edition of Basic Chemistry. She has participated in education grants for science teaching including the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teaching Excellence (LACTE) and a Title III grant at her college. She speaks at conferences and educational meetings on the use of student-centered teaching methods in chemistry to promote learning success of students.

Good for review and reference

My friend A. Simone bought this book, and this is what she had to say about it: Chemistry is typically a tough subject for many people, but this book makes it very easy to understand. I used this book for my chemistry class and loved it. This book was very helpful to me throughout the course. At my college, we had the condensed version of this book which only contained the topics we would need. My version of this book was still very large. The size of the book may be intimidating, but it is written very well. It explains the easier concepts nicely, but also breaks down the harder topics for a better understanding. My favorite part about this textbook was the graphics. All the graphs, tables, charts, and diagrams were great to refer to, especially for visual learners like myself.

Although, I did not use this book on a daily basis, my purpose for it was to review or refer back to it. I had an excellent teacher, who made the material fun and easier to learn. The practice problems in the book are very helpful as well. They vary in difficulty, ensuring that you will know how to do simple and harder problems of the same topic.

Even though I did not use this book as the bulk of my studying material, it is definitely very useful and resourceful. If someone had to use this book to teach themselves or read chapter by chapter, it wouldn't be difficult to do. The way the book is organized makes it simple to follow along.

The most useful thing about this textbook was the conversion charts in the back of the book. I used this a lot for homework and studying. It has everything from metric conversions, temperature conversions, molarity conversions, ionization energy, periodic table, and many other conversions or numbers needed to do equations with.

You can’t beat the price that Amazon sells it for. I think this book is worth every penny. This is also a great textbook to have on hand, especially if you plan to take a higher level chemistry or even biology or anatomy classes. I think this book is a good reference, and I plan to keep it for the rest of my college career. With that being said, I would recommend buying this book instead of renting it.

Every page in this book truly looks like it would in the printed version, except perhaps that the images seem even clearer, more sharp. Navigation is incredibly easy, I don't have to struggle to find a specific page, or to flip from one to the next, the pages all load immediately and the table of contents is a touch away, but also hidden until you need it. I bought the Kindle book so I wouldn't have to carry around a heavy textbook, and because I can still do everything I can do with a printed book (highlight, bookmark, etc) without having to worry about damaging it. The downside is I can't re-sell it, and it does not come with the access code, or anything really, just the book itself.

Great book!

Really great book in helping you understand chemistry. The concept checks, sample problems, and study checks really help check your understanding, as well as all the problems included in each chapter. This book is geared towards students headed in the medical field, and does a great job tying together chemistry with real life.
