About the Author
R. Kent Hughes (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and visiting professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hughes is also a founder of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences throughout North America and worldwide. He serves as the series editor for the Preaching the Word commentary series and is the author or coauthor of many books. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, and have four children and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren.

Hmmm.... Deja Vu all over again...

This commentary reads well. It comes from a solid Reformed perspective. I had very few problems with the content (although Hughes' bracket-laden "translations" of the beatitudes appear to be almost intentionally absurd).
My problem with this commentary is that it is an almost exact copy of Boice's "The Sermon on the Mount," which was written some twenty-five years earlier. I was using both books (and several others) for some lesson preparation when teaching through the Sermon on the Mount and I can't believe how much Hughes seems to have lifted straight from Boice.
Some could be explained away. e.g., both men have great respect for Dr. Lloyd-Jones and his influence can be clearly seen in both. But Hughes just happens to decide to include most of the same obscure quotes, stories, etc? Entire chapters have the same structure, same illustrations (in the same order), much of the same language... As far as I could tell, he never gave any credit.
The material that actually *is* unique to Hughes is still quite good (although not as good as that which he has in common with Boice.) Anyway, unless there is some Q-theory at work here, I wonder how this volume came to be such a carbon copy.

Dr. Hughes is a superb preacher/writer

There are many books on the Sermon on the Mount. If you want a great overview with superb practical applications- then this is a book to read. He along with Dr. D. A Carson and Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones have written tremendously helpful books on Matthew 5-7. Dr. Lloyd-Jones's is two volumes in one and perhaps the best book I've ever read, Dr. Carson's is much shorter with quick overviews which give a great introduction to the Sermon on the Mount and Dr. Hughes's book in in the middle- not too long, not too short. He keeps your attention and I found it solid, extremely interesting and practical.
