About the Author

R. Kent Hughes (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and visiting professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hughes is also a founder of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences throughout North America and worldwide. He serves as the series editor for the Preaching the Word commentary series and is the author or coauthor of many books. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, and have four children and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren.

Hmmm.... Deja Vu all over again...

This commentary reads well. It comes from a solid Reformed perspective. I had very few problems with the content (although Hughes' bracket-laden "translations" of the beatitudes appear to be almost intentionally absurd).

My problem with this commentary is that it is an almost exact copy of Boice's "The Sermon on the Mount," which was written some twenty-five years earlier. I was using both books (and several others) for some lesson preparation when teaching through the Sermon on the Mount and I can't believe how much Hughes seems to have lifted straight from Boice.

Some could be explained away. e.g., both men have great respect for Dr. Lloyd-Jones and his influence can be clearly seen in both. But Hughes just happens to decide to include most of the same obscure quotes, stories, etc? Entire chapters have the same structure, same illustrations (in the same order), much of the same language... As far as I could tell, he never gave any credit.

The material that actually *is* unique to Hughes is still quite good (although not as good as that which he has in common with Boice.) Anyway, unless there is some Q-theory at work here, I wonder how this volume came to be such a carbon copy.

Dr. Hughes is a superb preacher/writer

There are many books on the Sermon on the Mount. If you want a great overview with superb practical applications- then this is a book to read. He along with Dr. D. A Carson and Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones have written tremendously helpful books on Matthew 5-7. Dr. Lloyd-Jones's is two volumes in one and perhaps the best book I've ever read, Dr. Carson's is much shorter with quick overviews which give a great introduction to the Sermon on the Mount and Dr. Hughes's book in in the middle- not too long, not too short. He keeps your attention and I found it solid, extremely interesting and practical.

The FIRST Robotics competition (www.usfirst.org) partners school students with engineering and design mentors to explore science, technology, and themselves through robotics. The challenge for each team is to develop a robot capable of out-performing other entries in a game that changes annually. Here, Wilczynski (mechanical engineering, U.S. Coast Guard Acad.), a FIRST Robotics Foundation board member, and Slezycki, an engineering student and FIRST competitor, document through photographs, drawings, and text the 2007 FIRST competition: Rack 'n' Roll. Thirty profiles of award-winning robots and their developers are presented. Robots were judged based on their performance in the many rounds of the game and the entries' creativity, design excellence, quality, and control system automation. Teams are given design specifications and a basic kit of parts and components, and from there they select strategies to play the game, develop functional requirements, conceptualize a robot, source and fabricate parts and assemblies, test materials, and develop control code. About the Author
Vince Wilczynski, Ph.D., directs the mechanical engineering major at a New England institution of higher education where he has incorporated robotics and homeland security projects into the mechanical engineering curriculum. He serves as the Vice President of Public Awareness for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, is a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the FIRST Robotics Foundation and is a fellow with the American Council on Education.Stephanie Slezycki, a FIRST Robotics alum, is a mechanical engineer at a marine systems defense contractor. She is engaged in technical evaluation and implementation of design improvements to future platforms and also studies the adaptation of robotic technology to improve manufacturing processes.

I wish I had found this book the first year that I sponsored a FIRST Robotics team. It shows the design process from concept to competition for the most successful teams. There are lots of good ideas here for starting teams. Buy the Aim High book also.

Bar Far the Best Introduction to GPS Engineering !

Of all the engineering books on GPS, the book by Misra and Enge is ideally suited as a textbook on this subject and is the best available. This book provides a complete description of the principles of operation of GPS receivers, with an emphasis on system modeling for analysis and design. This book provides an excellent discussion of delay lock loops, phase lock loops, signal acquisition, signal structure, and error modeling. In addition, this book also goes into depth on how the carrier phase and code phase measurements are derived. Finally, an outstanding feature of this book is its presentation of current technical issues, which is invaluable as a starting point for graduate research.
There are many other books on GPS engineering out there, but the book by Misra and Enge is the best place to start - and it will give you a very good start!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 “for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.”
Over a 64-year span, Churchill published over 40 books, many multi-volume definitive accounts of historical events to which he was a witness and participant. All are beautifully written and as accessible and relevant today as when first published.
During his fifty-year political career, Churchill served twice as Prime Minister in addition to other prominent positions—including President of the Board of Trade, First Lord of the Admiralty, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Home Secretary. In the 1930s, Churchill was one of the first to recognize the danger of the rising Nazi power in Germany and to campaign for rearmament in Britain. His leadership and inspired broadcasts and speeches during World War II helped strengthen British resistance to Adolf Hitler—and played an important part in the Allies’ eventual triumph.
One of the most inspiring wartime leaders of modern history, Churchill was also an orator, a historian, a journalist, and an artist. All of these aspects of Churchill are fully represented in this collection of his works.

The Best Came Last

Since 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, I decided to devote my free monthly books from the Kindle lending library to those dealing with The Great War. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Winston Churchill’s World Crisis Collection on WWI was available and slogged my way through all five volumes. Churchill’s writing is fluid, lucid, and detailed in this volume as in the previous four.
“The World Crisis, Vol. 5” contains far and away more information on the other, might I say forgotten, fronts of WWI than any of his other volumes. I felt that he coverage of the Eastern Front was the real strength of this final volume.
Fully recognizing that I am on very shaky ground criticizing someone of his stature, I felt that in several instances he engaged in self-aggrandizement and justification of his decisions when he was in government, especially Gallipoli. It seemed to me that in some instances he profited from the benefit of 20-20 hindsight. I was a bit surprised at the whitewash he gave Tsar Nicholas II.
I recommend this volume for serious students of World War I and / or avid fans of Churchill.

Beware! Some Scribner's Sets Are 6 Volumes.

I'm sure Volume Five is a 5-star book. However, while most photos and descriptions, including the "Look Inside" feature, show the Scribner's Set as a 5-volume set with Volume 5 as The Eastern Front, you need to contact the seller to verify that the Volume 5 they are selling is not in fact, The Aftermath. Some Scribner's sets have The Aftermath as Volume 5 and The Eastern Front as Volume 6. I found out the hard way when I got a copy of Volume 5 that was The Aftermath and a copy of Volume 4 that was not The Aftermath, but rather the earlier portion of the series that covered the end of the war.

Churchill's account of the eastern front in the First World War is worth reading, even though it was published in the 1920's. Lots of useful maps compliment Churchill's excellent recounting of the battle and campaigns. I also recommend the works of Veronica K. Clark, especially The Union Jackal. It shows the other side of Churchill and the British.
